Stomach and esophagus cancer

Hi there, a very close family member has recently been diagnosed with esophagus cancer, we have since found out it has actually spread through lymph nodes and from her stomach.. Her first chemo starts this week, we are at this point lucky enough that none of us have experienced cancer first hand so I don’t think any of us are ready for what we might expect. We are visiting her Friday and her chemo starts the day before, approximately 10days after her first round of chemo we are going for a 4 day break, I want to be able to support her and our family as much as possible, is it likely that the first round of chemo won’t cause too many symptoms? Do the symptoms get worse the more rounds of chemo you have? If anyone here has experienced (or a family member) stomach or esophagus cancer I’d be forever grateful for any advice you may have... thank you in advance, x

  • Hi Sarah,

I have cancer of the oesophageal/gastric junction - which is very similar.

Our reactions to chemo are very individual and varies from one type of chemo to another and between patients. Do you inow what type of chemo regime your family member will be receiving?

In my own case I was on EOX and had some side effects on the day of my first session but the impact slowly grew over time - mainly feeling sick and exhausted with some nerve damage and cold sensitivity.

On the plus side, the side effects were almost all gone within weeks of my final cycle of chemo, my cancer was knocked for six and I'm still standing 5 years on.

    Good luck!

    Dave

  • Hi Sarah, My husband had oesphageal cancer.  With his first chemo treatment (weekly) he had an allergic reaction to the chemo (which is fairly common from what we were told) they stopped the treatment, treated his allergic reaction and once that had settled, continued the chemo.  Made it very long day.  His side-effects after that first treatment weren't too severe.  He did find though that subsequent rounds of chemo got progressively worse.  So severe in his case that the last (6th) round was cancelled altogether and he was hospitalized for nearly 3 weeks.  Sorry I can't remember to name of that chemo treatment.  Then months later he went through 4 rounds of Folfox (different to the first chemo) and the effect of this one was worse than the first chemo and he was hospitalized after each of the 4 treatments.  The 5th round he was supposed to have was cancelled.  He had vomitting, nausea, extreme exhaustion, numbness, sensitivity to cold, weakness, problems with his heart (not sure if this was from chemo or the previous radiation treatment). His side effects lasted for weeks after treatment finished.  It really does vary with the individual.  The Drs thought he would cope well with treatment as he was healthy and relatively fit prior to starting treatment.
Wishing you and your relative all the best.
    Sue

  • Wow that’s amazing thank you for sharing. I know each case is very different but it’s great to hear your cancer didn’t stand a chance. She is on something beginning with c  in the hospital and then has a pump which is there for 4 days whilst she’s at home. She has been quite lethargic and very nauseous and has been sick around 5 times since Friday (chemo was Thursday). I guess every individual case is so different. Best wishes x
