Advice -new diagnosis awaiting another scan

My 67year old mum had a pet scan 2 weeks ago and has been diagnosed with Lung cancer.  We have been told it is slow growing and she has been scheduled for a scan again in 1 year.  I felt this was far too long but they ‘reassured’ us this was what the experts had agreed on as it was slow growing..

Also they said a ‘hot spot’ had shown up in her cheek and we are now waiting almost 3weeks for a more detailed head scan.

We are so worried that waiting so long will make things worse and dont know what the plan is if they find something in her mouth too. Is there other things that can show up as hot in the scan?  My mum is a smoker so really concerned she does have it in mouth too if so what happens then?

  • Hello Mandy

From your post I wasn't sure what type of cancer your mum has in her lung.  Usually, with the more common types of lung cancer the doctors like to start treatment reasonably soon.  But it is possible in her situation that she may have a less common type that it is safe to monitor.  Or she may have enlarged lymph nodes and the doctors are not sure if these are cancer.  Sometimes in this situation these are monitored for a while before being biopsied or treated.

Probably the best thing to do would be to try and get to speak to her doctors again and ask them what type of cancer she has as this might help to explain things quite a bit.

From your post it sounds like she probably has been seen by a multidisciplinary team (MDT).  This is a group of expert doctors and health professionals who look at someones situation from a number of different points of view to help decide how best to look after them.  You might want to check this is the case and if not ask for her to be reviewed by an MDT.

I am afraid I don't know what the hot spot might be in her cheek.

I am sorry I can't be any more definite than this and I would suggest that you try to get to talk to her doctor again to help you understand what is going on.

  •  They didn’t tell us what type of cancer it was and it was all a bit of a blur really.

Thanks for your reply I will contact them to try and find out some more information.
