Does my mom really need the radiation?

Hello everyone, my mother diagnosed with breast cancer and had her partial mastectomy, her lump node found clear no metastatic.she is healthy and no other health issues . Doctor said no chemo required but advised for radiation. I was wondering if the cancer is removed does she really need to go through the radiation? I heard a lot of side effects of radiation. Wondering if we could avoid this and only continue with tamoxifen? Any experience opinion to share with me please?

  • Hi there...

Well I can't advice you mum one way or the other ... I can only tell you my journey ..

I'm not qualified in nursing so this info is what I understand the radiotherapy to be for ... although the lumps gone .. lymph nodes clear ... they offer radiotherapy as an extra , just in case there's rouge cancer cells hanging around ... it's like a double whammy to the cancer ...

I had a mastectomy last July .. my untie had the same a few months after ...we both had a grade three her 2 neg oestrogen positive lump ... I had a clear lymph node .. so didn't need chemo ... but like your mum I was offered radiotherapy ... I weighed everything up .. and because of my bone problems decided against as the radio could weaken bones further .. but I am doing tamoxifen for the foreseeable. . And after an emotional start, then settled down .. I'm fine ... been on them nearly a year .. and against the odds .. feeling good ..

Now my aunty who had the same diagnosis as me also diddnt need chemo .. but was offered radiotherapy and 5 years on something Simerla to tamoxifen ... she was fine through treatment apart from less energy .. she didn't loose her hair .. and here we both are the following year both o.k ...

So I would say get all the info .. find out the difference in the odds ...think about it ...and best of luck on which ever she chooses ... Chrissie x

  • I had wide local incision (lumpectomy) and was advised a course of radiotherapy. I totally trusted my medical team and went for it. Even though the cancer was gone I considered it precautionary and my insurance for a cancer free future.

I had very few side effects. No skin reaction until treatment had finished and then it was only a bit itchy and felt a bit hot. This only lasted 2-3 weeks. I felt slightly more tired after treatment had finished and again this only lasted 2-3 weeks.

I'm now 5 months post treatment and feel absolutely fine and cured. The whole experience now feels like a distant memory which shows how far I've come in such a short time

Whatever your mums decision I wish her well for the future x

  • My cancer was on the vocal cords and, after 2 minor surgeries, one to remove the small growth, the second to laser remaining cancer cells, I was advised a short course of RT as Insurance to be 100% positive that all the cancer cells were destroyed. At my meeting with the oncology team I was advised of all the side effects radiation MIGHT have on me. As the radiation was to be on my throat these entailed not being able to eat leading to weight loss and insertion of a feeding tube, difficulty and pain in swallowing and radiation burns. I was quietly terrified, but agreed to the 4 week course as my doctors advised it for the best. It turned out that I needn’t have worried. The radiation itself is totally painless. I could eat throughout and by applying cream regularly to my skin avoided burns. I have had a couple of check ups since and am cancer free. So, my advice would be to go with the radiation for later peace of mind. My side effects were minimal, slight fatigue, sore throat and excess mucous..... 4 months down the line only the mucous problem persists. Modern radiation treatment is highly targeted to avoid healthy cells and this greatly minimises side effects. Good luck for the future on whatever course of treatment you decide.

  • I would like to thanks everyone for replying my question. Sorry for late reply as I was busy with mom’s treatment. She already stared her radiation and she has done alreay 4 of it. So far she is ok , it’s really painless and it takes in total 10 mins only .I don’t regret of choosing radiation for her. Once again thank you all for taking time to reply me :)

  • I'm really pleased things are going well for your mum.

Please tell her to use a good double base cream on the area receiving radiation. My doctor gave me Isomol gel and I still use it now.

Wishing her a happy and healthy future x
