Kidney cancer

I saw my consultant on Monday who is 90% sure the mass on my left kidney is cancer.

My operation for the removal of my left kidney is scheduled for 12th September and I was really quite relieved about finding out. I’ve read information about diagnosis, etc. and a lot of it talks about stages & grades of your cancer but this was never mentioned - does this only happen once the mass has been removed and examined?

I’m starting to worry about if it’s spread - I know these are things out of my control but I look at my children and my heart aches that they may grow up without me.

  • Hi Shelly

this is probably the worst bit for you - not knowing & waiting! I’m 8 weeks after a radical nephrectomy (removal of my whole left kidney) my mass was cancerous and measured 9.7cm but the consultant believes it was contained within my kidney so couldn’t see any spread in my scans,

Once you know what they plan to do you will feel a little better but it’s the lack of control we have that makes us feel so helpless.

if you’re on Facebook they is a great support group called kidney cancer support network which has lots of people on there that have had surgery, treatment or are waiting for results. I’ve found it a great help and support.

Let us know how you get on with the new consultant xx

  • Hi sazwats

You are right this is the worst bit, the journey so far has been a nightmare of stress and anxiety which has caused me to go on the sick from work.

How are you feeling now and how long were you in hospital for.

I feel as though there is alsorts I want to ask then when I start typing my mind goes blank.

I've got an appointment for Monday 12th Nov, it was for 19th but a letter arrived to to say it had been brought forward to the 12th so that sent my mind into overdrive.

Thank you for the information with Facebook I will look into that.

I will keep you up to date as to what happens on Monday and thank you for replying.

    Take care

    Shellyx

  • I had my op Wednesday morning and left hospital Saturday afternoon.

im doing well - I’m tired quite a lot but my body is working hard repairing itself from the surgery - 9 weeks today o had it done.

how did your appt go on Monday? You have to keep positive and focus on the fact they have found it now and your treatment can begin.

if you need to chat you can message me direct with any questions xxx

  • Hi Shelly

I just wondered how everything is going? Have you had your op yet?

Sorry I didn’t reply sooner but not been on in a while.

im probably back to 98% health after my op but still get a little tired - I hope things are going well for you xx

  • Hi sazwats

Don't worry about replying straight away you will be busy with everyday things and familly.

How are you doing as did you have op in September.

I've had mine on the 14th Dec, it was supposed to be Jan then moved to 17th Dec then got a phone call on Thurs to come in next day for op as there was a cancellation.

Had a partial left with keyhole and ended up with a drain in which they said is normal when it is partial as there will be bleeding but that took some healing but again was told this is normal. The last couple of days I've started to feel a bit stronger but just sometimes I feel as though I'm getting a temp and get pain  but again the GP said it would be raised all the time, just don't know if I'm reading too much into things as still get anxious. When I spoke to nurse she said you have been pulled about and things have been moved about so the pain is normal but sometimes I felt I could not take a full breath in this seems to have got better over last few days but then it's only been 31 days since op.

The consultant said it will be about 6 weeks after op before I see him for results was that the same for You, not looking forward to.

Do you drive as how soon did you start driving after op.

Hope your feeling a lot better and stronger.

    Thanks for replying

  • Hey Michele

Yep my op was in September and I would say I’m about back to full health now.

i got my results from the Macmillan nurse and only saw the consultant last week since the op. I think it was 6 weeks post op that my results came back a thankfully all good and no follow up treatment!

its tough because you expect to ‘bounce’ back and it definitely takes time - 4 weeks after my op I thought that was me back to full fitness but I did too much and put myself back! I felt properly fit after about 8 weeks though still got very tired. Take your time and you will get there.

i started driving at about 5 weeks after but they say leave it until you know you can do an emergency stop if you needed too.

try not to worry about your results - the main thing is they found it and they’ve taken it out, anything else you will deal with if you need too!

    stay in touch xx
