erythrocytosis

Hi

My partner has just been diagnosed with eythrocytosis.  I know that this means that his body is producing too many red blood cells and he has already had one venesection for this.  His hypertension is being treated and he is making lifestyle changes (stopping smoking and limiting his alcohol intake).  He will not allow me to go on his appointments with him and he is not undestanding half of what is being said to him.  We do get copies of any letters.

My question is this - is erythrocytosis cancer? Or can it lead to cancer?  He has been tested for the JAK2 gene but as yet we have no result from that.

The ironic thing is that I used to run a carer support service so now I know how frustrating it is to be a carer with minimal knowledge shared with me !!

Thank you for reading my ramblings.

  • Welcome to Cancer Chat MMu although I'm sorry for the reason that brings you to us.

I've had a look around our website and found that erythrocytosis is also more commonly known as Polycythaemia Vera and you can find out more about it on our website by clicking here. Hopefully it will help answer some of your questions but do give our cancer nurses a call if you'd like to chat about this. Their lines are open Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m on 0808 800 4040.

I think there are a few members on the forum that are familiar with this diagnosis and hopefully some of them will be along soon to offer their support and advice.

    Kind regards,
