Testicular Cancer and carboplatin treatment

Hi All

im looking for some advice and guidance. My parter has been diagnosed with Testicular Cancer and is due to start treatment with Carboplatin. He has had his testicle removed and after his CT scan it showed that it had gone up into his lymph’s in his pelvis and higher up . He was then sent for contrast CT which showed that the lymph’s in his pelvis and higher (unsure were, but the doctor kept rubbing above her belly button and middle of her lower rib cage, if that makes sense) had resolved itself BUT they found something ‘suspicious’ in his lower lungs. They then weren’t sure weather his cancer had become metastatic. To cut a long story short, he had a blood test which revealed that his tumour markers were decreasing so decided to do 1 cycle of carboplatin and keep an eye on his lungs etc rather than giving BEP as a treatment.

My question is, has anyone had just the one cycle of carboplatin? And what side effects they experienced? We have 2 children 4 and 10months and id like to prepare myself for what’s going to happen so I can explain to them (the inquisitive 4 year old more so)

Will he lose his hair? When in the cycle will he be poorly and how poorly will he be?

I know everyone experiences different side effects but it would be nice to hear other people experiences.

Thankyou in advance to anyone that replies, it’s really appreciated

  • Hello Rebecca,

First of all, welcome to our forum!

I hope you will get to chat to others here who have had Carboplatin treatment for testicular cancer and that they will come and share with you the side effects they may have experienced - though as you have rightly pointed out, these may vary from one person to another.

We have some information on our website about Carboplatin side effects which you can read here. You might also be interested in finding out more about testicular cancer on this page. Our nurses are also only a free phone call away if you live in the UK and you can reach them on this number 0808 800 4040 - Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm so don't hesitate to give them a call and ask them what they know about possible side effects of this particular drug.

I know how inquisitive 4 year olds can be and how they can ask some very difficult questions sometimes. We have a useful page on talking to children about cancer which you can read here. As nothing replaces personal accounts, I hope you will also hear from some of our members' experiences of talking to children about cancer. They may have some suggestions about what they said to them to explain what is going on, explaining the treatment process using words that little ones can comprehend.

Keep us updated on how things go for your partner. We hope it all goes well for him and that any possible side effects will be minimal.

    Best wishes,
