Tamoxifen advice

Hi everyone

I have recently been diagnosed with Stage 2 Oestrogen receptive Breast Cancer and will be having surgery to remove the mulp tomorrow, followed by a course of radiotherapy. I have also been advised that as I am pre-menopausal, I will be prescribed Tamoxifen for the next ten years. This is a daunting prospect for me, much worse that the cancer diagnosis suprisingly!!

Does anyone have experience of Tamoxifen that they could share with me?? I am seriously considering declining it due to the reported side effects.

  • Hi there ...

I had grade 3 her 2 neg estrogen poss .. last July l had right side massectomy... The op itself was a lot better then I had in my head ... They sent lump away to the U S A and came back low risk of spread and lymph node was clear ... So didn't need chemo and refused radiotherapy because my bones are arthritic all ready ... But agreed to tamoxifen ... First week fine, then got really emotional , crying at everything .. but I came on here and found out that was quite normal for some... So took mild anti depressant for a while and emotions back to normal ... I've not had any regrets taking it... Just be prepared at first to have a few funny symptoms ... I'm on it for the foreseeable and for me, like knowing it's working on that cancer to keep it out ...

[@rileyroo]‍ had tamoxifen and hopefully shell pick this up and tell you her experience ... But there's lots of us breast lasses on here, so someone will be able to help with any questions ... So you take care and know your deff not alone ... Chrissie x

  • Thank you!

I think I'm building it up in my head, so good to hear real life experiences :)

  • Hi Vicky.

I’m also on Tamoxifen altho post menopausal. I have had side effects, not going to sugar coat the pill here. For the first few months the sweating was horrendous, night and day. It had started to calm down just before this heatwave started, yay!

I also find that my emotions are more volatile, not that I’m placid at the best of times, but I can feel quite liw for no teal reason. Have to say this doesn’t last long.

I had my dose adjusted as I found I could handle 10mg twice a day but not 20mg once a day. A bit bizarre but there you go.

There are horror stories around a lot of the treatments for cancer, but in my experience, no treatment for any illness comes without the potential for side effects.

  • Thank you

That's helpful. I guess I'll just have suck it and see!

I'm glad things are starting to improve for you.

  • All you can do is try. It’s also possible that you may find pne brand suits you better than others so do give it a go.

  • Hello dear wanted to know what does it call when they send the lump to usa ? I mean what kinda test is this ? My mom also diagnosed with breast cancer stage 2 , had partial mastectomy after the surgery they confirmed her lump node is clear but due to her body pain doctor wanted to send her lump to usa , which going to cost a lot for us as my mom doenst have any medical coverage yet , so now the nurse told me she will ask my mom’s onchologist if she really needs it or not but I am going to have her pet ct scan done next week hopefully, so doctor told us before mom doesnt need any chemo but radiotherapy,  that’s ehh wondering how your doctor decided that you don’t need both chemo and radiation? Could you please share your experience, thanks

  • Hi there Alien  ...

As far as I know, they do far more intensive exam of the lump and found it was "low risk of spreading" sorry can't help more, but I did find out it costs a couple of thousand pounds, which the N H S paid for .

Because of those results they said didn't need chemo but they offered radiotherapy. . I was 63 at the time ..But I read up on it and the risk of bone thinning etc was a step too much for my bones .. as I've got osteoarthritis, trapped nurve and stenosis and scoliosis all ready ... and couldn't take risk of it getting worse ... and as low risk, clear lymph node ... even though I was a grade 3, i weighed everything up and couldn't risk radiotherapy ..

if I'd been fit and younger, I would have had the radiotherapy ... but I've got an amazing surgeon who let's me have control on my treatment ...

For me, it's the right way .. but everyone is different .. but a year on and doing well ... but why have you got to pay ... I take it you've gone private ... so if i was you, I'd do my homework... get all the info on why from your oncology team... hope that helps a little ... chrissie x

  • Hi there, I was diagnosed with a non-invasive 1cm tumor in my right breast. Had the lump removed along with a couple of lymph nodes.  Stated Tamoxifen 6 days ago and as yet have not experienced any side effects. Start 3 weeks of radiotherapy tomorrow. Remember we are all different and some people will react badly to medication, some people will not have any effects.

    Take care, stay strong  x

  • Thank you so much for sharing your experience. I hope it continues to go well for you!
