Husband has Bowel cancer in small intestine & Prob. Liver

Hi,

Following a trip to A & E almost 2 weeks ago with a suspected Crohns flare and blockage we were given the devistating news last tuesday that my Husband has Bowel Cancer in a stricture in his J-Pouch (internal loop of the small intestine as the large intestine was removed 20 years ago due to Crohns). We are completely shocked, as were the team looking after him. He had emergency surgery last tuesday to form a loop ileostomy to stop his bowel perforating but had to be done just under his ribs as he his bowel is so matted from pervious Crohns surgeries so unless the stoma can be re-sited at a later date he will have to stay on TPN for life. If this wasn't enough he has multiple leisions on his liver which they are almost 100% sure are secondary cancer. They took a biopsy when they did the surgery and will be having a multidisaplinary meeting today which we will know the outsome of tomorrow and finally know exactly what we are dealing with and what can be done.

I was wondering if anyone has been in a similar situation and can offer advice on specialists in this area please? He is currently in London but we live in Cambridgeshire (we had transferred his Crohns care because of multiple failings and constantly cancelled appointments).

We are a young couple (37 & 34) with a 6 year old so finding this all very difficult - not to say that it wouldnt be difficult at any age.

Hoping for some positive news tomorrow, I just keep holding on to the fact that he has bloods every month for liver function because of the crohns meds and doesnt look jaundice etc. Seems all of this has been missed - they only did an MRI end of November last year and he has endoscopies around once a year where they are supposed to biopsy. When I feel strong enough I will be getting to the bottom of why this was never picked up by them.

  • Hello 2522lau,

A warm welcome to our forum. I am so sorry to hear about what your poor husband has been going through at such a young age. It must have come as a shock to everyone to discover that he has bowel cancer after decades of also having had to deal with Crohn's.

How did the multidisciplinary meeting go yesterday? Do you have a clearer idea now of what you are dealing with and what the treatment plan is going to be?

I hope that you will hear from others here who have been in a similar situation and that they will be along soon to share their story with you.

If you have anything you wish to discuss with our nurses, you can give them a call if you live in the UK on this free number 0808 800 4040. Their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm

    Best wishes,
