Merkel cell

Hello everyone, I was wondering if anyone had any advice or has any experience with Merkel cell carcinoma?

My dad had a “boil” removed from the top of his arm, it was clear it wasn’t a boil but we suspected it was a cyst of some sort instead. A week or so later (this Tuesday just gone), he got a call from the doctor who removed the lump and he’s been told it’s Merkel cell sarcoma. All I can find online is carcinoma not sarcoma, is this the same thing?

The doctor said that he will receive an urgent referral letter within two weeks to check he’s removed the whole tumor and for treatment. He hasn’t given us much more information other than that and we are of course very worried. Surely my dad should be seen sooner than after 2 weeks? From what I’ve read online it seems to be quite  rare and aggressive so I would have thought they’d want to see him sooner rather than later.

Does anyone have and experience or advice?

Many thanks,

debbie

  • Hi Debbie,

I know you've had a reply from one of our cancer nurses on your other post which has answered quite a few of your questions already but I just wanted to reply to this one to put you in touch with two members on the forum that have had experience with Merkel Cell carcinoma. [@Whalle01]‍ was diagnosed a few months ago and [@tracywd]‍ has been supporting her husband on his journey dealing with this diagnosis and now that I've mentioned them in this post, fingers crossed they'll pop by when they can to share their stories and advice with you.

    Kind regards,
