My dear mum

Hi all,

I'm not a cancer patient myself but my mother has just been diagnosed with lung cancer, small cell lung cancer to be specific.  After hearing all this recently,  I've been going through a mixture of immense worry and hope.

The consultant has said she's stage 4. As you can imagine this is extremely sad and devastating news for all of us. She recently had a pleural effusion which is where the biopsy was done which led to the first report coming back as cancer. We are still awaiting the rest. She is due to see an oncologist next week. I've been trying to do some research on this disease myself and as far as information goes, its extremely rare to get lung cancer if you don't smoke or are exposed to smoking.  My mother has never smoked in her life not even passively.  Both my parents are non smokers. I keep questioning their diagnosis. Am I being paranoid?

  • Hi all,

So after a long delay we finally have the results of my mothers reports since her initial diagnosis. Its been confirmed by the oncologist that she has non- small cell lung cancer. .phew! Adenocarcinoma to be exact but at stg 4 as it has spread to her hip bones. The recommended therapy suggested by the doctor is immunotherapy,  which sounds better than the others as it causes less side affects and has a high succes rate.

My question was whether we should get a second opinion and the Dr said that's fine but as treatment may start with in the next couple of weeks we need to be quick. In two minds at the mo, whether to pursue this treatment and hope for the best? Or get a second opinion which could stage the cancer differently? The latter will of course take longer....what to do :(

  • Hi there; sorry about delay in responding.    At least you know the score and what is to be expected.  If you are satisfied with what has been said then I should go with it but of course it is not my decision to make.  Would you know where to go for a second opinion?  I don't mean that to sound rude but I myself would not know how to do this so - when in doubt - I had a look at the MacMillan website where I happened to be on another matter.

    www.macmillan.org.uk/.../getting-a-second-opinion.html

I realise that you may have already made your decision so best wishes to your mum and yourselves whichever way you go.

    Annie

  • Hi Annie,

Thanks again for replying and don't worry you didn't reply late ;)

I've been told that I have to go back to the gp for him to refer us to someone in order to get a second opinion.

This may take a while and hence means her current treatment will need to be put on hold. However,  after reading into it and the importance of accurately staging the cancer, it might be worth a shot. I'm waiting for the details of the last visit ie with oncologist,  to be sent over to the gp first before we can proceed with obtaining a second opinion . I'm not that clued up as to what it would entail exactly but would be good know if anyone else has been in a similar situation and whether getting a second opinion helped in anyway ;)
