Wide local excision for malignant melanoma

So I underwent a wide local excision for stage 1 malignant melanoma just over 2 weeks ago.

The site of the minor surgery is just below my knee on the inner aspect.

I had unrealistically expected to recover in a couple of days as I had done after my initial biopsy and was in no way prepared for either the procedure or recovery time.

After 2 weeks I am still struggling to walk, negotiate the stairs or do anything that requires knee bending either repeatedly or for any length of time (eg sitting normally on a chair). My leg is also numb in places.

I had the stitches taken out today and the nurse wasn’t concerned in any way and the GP deemed me not fit for work for another couple of weeks.

All very well but I’m usually a very active person. I ran a half marathon for charity a couple of months ago and I regularly go the gym, exercise and go on lovely long dog walks.

Currently struggling to go anywhere outside the house. Has anyone else had a similar experience.

I’d love some reassurance that the mobility will return and that I’ll be ‘fighting fit’ again soon.

(Oh, probably doesn’t help I’m on methotrexate which I understand is an immunosuppressant and not conducive to a quick recovery).

Any feedback or advice would be greatly appreciated xAx

  • Hi

I have been diagnosed with a stage 1b melonoma (0.9).  I am due to attend for a WLE and wondered if anyone could tell me whether this operation is similar to the first in terms of does it feel similar to the first op (time and feeling wise) but obviously takes a little longer to recover from and may be a little more painful afterwards due to the depth of cut?

    Thanks,

    Julie.

  • Hi Julie

just read your post and I'm in the same position as you with the same dimensions of original

I am so unsure of taking the WLE and was wondering how it went for you and hoping since writing that all went well xx

  • Hi Lynn

I had my WLE on 21 December. I can honestly say the procedure is no different to the first. In and out within the hour. If anything it was less daunting as I knew the procedure so felt less scared of the unknown.

I toyed with saying no completely but it does give you that extra reassurance that they definitely got it all as they'll test the surrounding tissue that they take away.

I had my first check up recently and all was good. I can't say I'm not anxious and scared about what might happen in the future but I'm definitely glad I had the WLE.

    Thinking of you x

  • Thank you for that

I do feel it's something I should sensibly have done and that has reassured me

glad you're doing good that's so great to hear

i have to make my decision today so think I'm not going for the biopsy lymph one just the extra op and can have it after my holiday in May

I will keep you updated and thanks again for the positive spin on this and so glad you are doing well

i do appreciate we still have it constantly in our minds so here's to us all *** well

    have a lovely week
