Essential Thrombocythemia (ET)

Hi i have recently been diagnosed with a rare blood cancer Essential Thrombocythemia (ET). The exact causes of this type of cancer are unknown. Some researchers believe this could be caused by past exposure to ionising radiation like medical x-rays or nuclear fallout or some chemical substances such as Benzene & Toluene. I have worked for over 25 years in the protective coatings industry using all types of substances related to the ones mentioned therefore putting my illness down to this. I was just wondering if anyone else is suffering with the same illness on this forum.

  • Hallo Sabie, Chorister and everyone else,

    How are you?

  • Hi Everyone, I was late to the party about hearing that third jab and then a ‘booster’ is better protocol for immune suppressed folks like us so my 3rd vaccine jab was very recent……I had Pfizer (Oxford for first two) this time and my wife (not got any pre existing) got Moderna…….reason for this info is to advise that we both got very sore arms at injection site (wife also got a small rash) and both of us had quite bad flu symptoms for 24 hours…….then I learn from a friend (had it checked) that anyone who actually contracted the Delta variant is highly likely to get more severe side effects such as my wife and myself experienced. So the point of this is to explain that wife & I got Delta variant in mid June so the immune response was more dramatic and if anyone does have a more severe side effect on any 3rd or ‘booster’ jab that it’s likely that you could have got Delta and not realised it (my only symptom was loss of smell & taste) or that your immune response has waned but not to worry too much but if symptoms become severe or last more than 24 hours it is good idea to call GP or 111 for advice. Hope that helps and nobody gets the virus.
  • Hallo Rocco,

What really surprises me about your post is that you have actually had the Delta Covid and seem to be OK - the same as Sabie who had the original Covid early on.  So I am wondering what are we all so worried about?  Is ET, unlike some other platelet blood conditions, not really 'shielding' worthy?  Are we making a fuss about nothing, compared to people who are really on the edge?  I'm feeling a bit pseudo at the moment.  Would be interested to hear what other people think.

    Best wishes all from Jdog

  • Hi,

Obviously I'm no medical expert but I think that any disease / condition / viral / bacterial infection effects people in different ways even if age and any existing medical conditions are comparable between person to person. Specifically talking about myself and my experience of Delta variant I can say that even though I'm wrong side of 50 yrs old I beleieve my immune system is stronger than my biological age would suggest and that the viral load of Delta I received was probably quite small so I had less of a battle to fight. That all said C19 has had a lasting effect as my loss of smell is still very noticeable at around 50% and my loss of taste is only marginally better.

  • Hi Chorister

    Are you still around?

    Any news?

    Regards

    Jdog

  • Hallo Sabie

    How are you?

    What news?

Jdog is still alive and kicking.  Feels ok at the moment - ha ha

But my daughter tested positive for covid this morning and is hiding upstairs while I crawl up and down with cups of tea, a glass of wine and some dinner.

I tested negative. today but presumably will get it .  I am now studying the letters from NHS Scotland about what to do , about the new treatments I can get and so on.  Frankly I'd rather it was my daighter who got the new treatments.

Is there anyone still out there?  Rocco?  Chorister?  Beardo?

Love to hear from you.  Spring is here.

  • Rocco is still alive LOL - no real news so I consider it good news. The only thing changed for me recently is I've adopted the 'Greg's' diet so eating a lot of Greg's is not nomally recommended but I'm currently buring around 3500 calories a day so have actually lost weight.....trick is when my activity dies off then my Greg's habit will also need to die off ;)

  • Hallo Rocco!

    Great to hear from you.

That must be some super-activity you are doing.  Are you in training for something?

I'm afraid my calories are not getting burnt up as they should . . .

    Keep well, best wishes.

  • Hi Jdog,

My calorie burn is nothing to do with training for any event/challenge - I'm just doing a comprehensive refurb of a modest size house - not a full back to brick but as its 100 years old much more work than usual as had to hack off lots of old plaster and some rock hard cement by hand on ground floor to sort out damp plus lath & plaster ceilings upstairs to install insulation. On reflection all the hammering and carrying etc is a lot like 'barn' training e.g.  heavy sledge hammers are used to hammer tractor tyres which is also a great way to vent and destress. It's not a sustainable way to gain muscle and burn fat but does give a quick result so it will encourage me to get back into  becoming fitter since various 'lockdowns' all but stopped my motivation. That all said I'm looking to get a dog so that will keep me fit and much evidence towards promoting 'wellness' - looking at a Staffy as they are not just great companion dogs but also like training so will give my muscles a work out too :)

  • Hi jdog
