How long?

Hi - My husband has just been diagnosed with Stage 4 Renal which has already spread to lungs and lymph nodes in lungs.  Consultant was hopeful to start on drug therapy treatment and possibly a trial study but never mentioned any life expectancy which I am assuming there is one? My hubby is relieved and thinks the drugs will cure him.  I don't have the heart to tell him otherwise. He is fairly symptom free at the moment, save for weightloss and a cough. Can anyone advise please?  Thanks

  • Hi rosiesmum  ...

Time is so hard to give now ... there's people living way beond prognosis ... there's others gone much quicker ... I think there signs that the body is shutting down ... but I worked in a home for the elderly years ago ... and some would pick up out of the blue... others you'd have thought were o.k would pass quickly ... but if you go to home page here, put in your question it may have more advice, that may help ..take care ... • Hi Rosiesmum,

Sorry to hear about your husband's diagnosis.

I can only echo what Chris has said that it is almost impossible to say. Two people given near identical disgnoses on the same day can die years apart from each other. Outcomes are influenced by a huge range of factors such as age, how fit the individual is (which affects the level of treatment they can tolerate), how aggressive the cancer is, how the cancer reacts to treatment plus an element of luck.

I was given a very gloomy prognosis when I was diagnosed at stage 4 in late 2013, but luckily they got it wrong in my case and stll can't explain why. I am in no way cured, but I am living with cancer.

Your husband will come to terms with his condition in time and accept that his condition is incurable, but not hopeless. It's a tricky situation when partners have different understandings of a situation. On the one hand you don't want to burst his bubble, on the other you want to be realistic and enjoy the time that you have together.

    Good luck to you both.
    Dave
