Cold caps

Hi,

was diagnosed with breast cancer on the 10th. I am due to start chemo next Thursday and was just wondering if anyone had used cold caps and how effective they were in regards to hair loss. Just I’ve been put down to have one but it adds a lot of time to my hospital visit. Is it worth it or will I lose my hair anyway?

thanks, Candice x

  • Thanks Sandra. Oncologist today at 16.10 to discuss mri results as it’s shown signs of spreading so least i’ll Know where to go from here. Fingers crossed x

  • Hi Candice,

I said no to this one, but I suffer from hemiplegic migraines and ice pick headaches so I was not going to voluntarily have any pain in my head area :D

My hospital do offer it but are unconvinced of it's usefulness still, they haven't had someone on chemo for breast cancer NOT lose their hair yet.  But who knows...

I maybe find it easier than others but I'm just not fussed about losing my hair, it'll grow back, and my mum says that even though it feels like a long time AT the time, afterwards she felt like she wasn't that long without her hair at all.  I had mine cut short and am getting fringe pieces made from it that can be velcroed under scarves and hats just so I look more 'normal' for my nephew (he's only 3 and his mum's my identical twin so he already finds how I look confusing!)

I've bought some fantastic scarves and headcovers from the Deresina range and am looking forward to getting my sewing machine out and making some of my own.

Just a thought, it might be that it's a helpful process for your daughter to involve her as a fashion consultant for choosing head covers (if you don't go for the cold cap or if it doesn't work).  Might make it less scary for her?
