my mother newly diagnosed with breast cancer

Hello my mother was newly diagnosed with breast cancer today and is having a Mastectomy in three weeks time which i think is a long time to wait ..they found two cancerous lumps in her left breast and that is all i have been told ..i dont know what stage it is , if its invasive ...will she need chemo etc etc ...

I live with my mother who is also disabled having had polio as a child and im really struggling to understand any of it and what will happen and to be honest im absolutely terrified ...

my mother does not want to talk about it which i understand but i need to talk to somebody ..

thanks in advance for any replies

  • Hi Ricky ... if I were you call your Drs surgery in the morning ... it might need a wash out ... has she got a nurse coming round your house to check it ... if not tell your Drs your mum needs someone to look at her drain ..  don't take no... she needs it sorted ... if you get really worried, call A & E FOR ADVICE ...

if her scar gets red or hot phone the hospital as that may mean she has an infection in it .. don't panic but do tell someone ... she may need anti biotics ... I was on them after ...

Let us know how it goes ... Chrissie x

  • Hello she had the drain removed and is feeling ok other than nausea and not eating too much ....today she is very anxious as tommorow they will let her know what furthur treatment is needed and she is dreading needing chemotherapy ..

i read a letter they sent which was results of the biopsy they did which my mum wanted to read and her cancer is grade 2 and is ductal cancer ..the biggest tumour was 5 cm and the smallest was 2 cm ...i am thinking because of the size she will need more treatment and possible chemo but i dont know much about these things

i just hope the node they took was clear of cancer cells i guess we will find out tommorow

thanks for being help for me and supporative and i hope your well

  • Hi there Ricky...

Well good news the drain is out ... l bet she's really pleased about that ...

My lump was a grade 3 ... but my lymph node was clear ...

A lot all depends on tomorrow and what the lymph node was ...

Remember, I'm not qualified nurse so I'm just going on my experience. . And others I've talked too ... so I can only give you my opinion ... but I would think they will get all the information to gether ... grade, size, stage .. and lymph node ... and then they have a meeting to discuss the way forward ...

So take a pad and pen tomorrow. . Write down any questions your mum wants answered ... and write down what they say.... as we all forget by the time wer home ... and if you don't understand anything they say, ask them to explain as you need to understand all they tell you ...

You've done really well ... and I bet your mum is so proud of you ... l would be ... so anything you want to ask... I'm here most days ... take care ... Chrissie x

  • Thank you ..

    fingers crossed for tommorow

  • Hi Ricky,

i have been quiet for almost a month now as I have been dealing with my issues. Reading your post I felt like responding. Ricky these things can happen, but please always contact the  horse/Dr/hospital/surgeon as it needs to be checked and dealt with. I had a heamtoma after my op and the clot actually burst a stitch due to the swelling and it was like a big ballon bursting. It was operated the next day to sort it. Please anything you think is not right or worries you get in touch with the nurse.

I do hope the results you get will put your mind to rest.

Chemo is now given in almost all cases to prevent the cancer coming back. I have started mine and am feeling the strain. I shall soon put my notes on line.

    All the best.

    Rusk

  • Good luck for tomorrow for your mum ... I've got everything crossed ... chrissie X

  • hello there and thanks for your reply and advice - the wound although not seen it is healing ok according to the nurses and doctor ...

the results were not what we all wanted but i expected  that she would need more treatment :(

  • thank you ...

they found cancer cells in her lymth node that they removed but only a small bit they said ..they said they dont want to remove any more nodes as it could backfire on my mum and cause lymphedema so instead they are going to give her a week of targeted radiotherapy and put her on a hormone treatement which she is really worried about the most as she already gets aches in her bones ...shes obviously told the doctor this who have her the results and they are also sending her for a full bone scan now i dont want to say anything to my mum but do you think they are sending her for a bone scan to see if she is fit for hormone therapy or radiotherapy or to see if the cancer has not spread to her bones ....she really does not want to discuss it and i dont really know much to be honest as she gets herself into a stress when i try and talk to her ...i was trying to explain the fact the cancer responds to hormones means it has options to treat it .

today she had a bit of a panic attack and just stayed in her bedroom i think she is depressed i think she will need something for her anxiety so i will ring doctor in morning ...

thanks for all your kind words and responses and wishing her luck ...i guess the results could be worst the tumour was smaller than expected and she has stage 2 breast cancer

  • Hi Ricky. . So your mum has stage 2 so at least she knows now ... I had a grade 3 ...

Now the bone scan as far as l know, is normal as they are just getting an idea on her bone density ... so they can do another one later and compair so they know how it effects the bones ... so don't worry ... l have osteoarthritis and stenosis and scoliosis in my bones and I've been taking tamoxifen for about 6 months now , and I havnt noticed any change in my bones ... so I'll probably be on them for a few years ... so tell your mum not to over worry ...

When I get any news of any kind, i take myself off for a little while as it fills our heads and we need to to process the information and it will feel really scary .... so she's probly feeling a bit overwhelmed at the moment ... when I was newly diagnosed I asked my Dr for something to help, and he gave me dulsilupin and I took them for a week or two and they really did help ... they took the panicky feeling away ...

And she's only got a week of radio therapy ... my auntie had that but for a lot longer and she was tired but found it o.k ... though everyone is different ... so you just carry on being there and giving her space when she wants to be alone ... l am the same ... but your doing really well ... so thanks for keeping in touch ... let us know how she goes .. and don't forget to look after you too ... Chrissie x

  • Dear Ricky,

it is a regular thing to get a bone scan, so the Dr can see the density and the dosage and follow up to build on blood cells shall be based on  it. As I had had bone scans in the last 2 years, I did not need another one, otherwise ONC would have sent me for one.

I am quiet at present as I am not feeling great after my 1st chemo session and have been admitted again to hospital as the blood count had dropped and ONC felt I needed observation. I am better now and back home.

Although annoying, I have taken the thought that all this is for me to get better and fight this cancer.

i find difficult to focus on things and my wanders, but I have started to go for short walks which helps me clear my head. I also go and sit in the garden, enjoying the colours of flowers.

your mum and you need to give it time. You will say it is easy for me to say, and yes you are not wrong, for what you are going through only you know. I hope this chat area helps you. I shall be thinking of you and your mum. Wish you and mum all the best.

    bye
