My dad has Oesophageal Cancer

Hi,

My dad was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer out of the blue 3 weeks ago. They are away to do a PET scan then a laparoscopy before they decide the best treatment plan. Has anyone had this type of cancer? Any advise/help would be much appreciated.

Trying to stay as positive as possible.

Thanks

  • Hi there Enn

welcome to the forum and sorry to hear about your dad

i am now 3.5 years post treatment for throat cancer and doing well, so I guess your dad might have similar Radio and chemo therapy .... with differences

My treatment lasted 6 weeks and it’s not the easiest of treatment to get through and recovery and recovery can be slow.

although people go through like treatments for the same cancer, their own personal journeys can be very different ... we are all unique and one of a kind

let us know how your dad gets on please and ask anything at anytime

    vatch

  • Hi Vatch

Many thanks for your response and its really good to hear that you are doing well after being through this similar kind.

Hopefully over the next few weeks the drs will give him his treatment plan and we will know more.

    Will keep posted :-)

  • hi my husband was diagnosed august 2017,he was under a hospital in great yarmouth when after the laparoscopy he went back for the results which they found cancer they sorted the op date 13th november 2017 but we had to go to a hospital in norfolk for the operation, had a lot of trips before as had loads of tests again but we were given a top cancer specialist, he removed the cancer by going down throat with tube and a cutting type item and cut away the cancer,it was about 4 weeks later we got the results back saying saying they had removed the cancer but unfortunatley there was not enough clear margin before the wall of his gullet and on 13th november he had to have an op was told he would be in hospital for 6 weeks as major surgery but then he was offered keyhole which is new he had that went in on the monday ,came home saturday afternoon depending how determind your dad is they do warn you can loose up to two and a half stone as your stomach is smaller what they do is pull the stomach up and staple inside to make a new gullett (oesophageas) my husband only lost half a stone but make sure not to have to bigger meals as they make you sick or upset tummy,we work part-time and my husband was back after 2 months fully after 3 months he still has the puliing in his side where they have pulled the stomach up,he had 7 cuts in his back no longer than an inch and one that was about 4 to 5 inches long he has done well as surgeon said 6 months so it is up to the individual keeping everything crossed go back in july to check he is all clear also by going and having this operation he needed no chemo or radiotheraphy hope this helps

  • Hi thunderbird1, many thanks for your message.

Very sorry to hear that your husband has went through this but also its good to hear a positive outcome that hes now okay and fingers crossed going forward Im sure all will be well x

This has definetly helped me with perhaps what to expect going forward.

My dad has a pet scan next week then a laparoscopy.

He is being well fed just now by my mum as we did think he would loose weight like you have mentioned once had his treatment hence it being the stomach area.

I think just now its more the waiting about and not knowing that seems to be the worst but will stay as positive as possible for my familys future.

  • hi nice to hear back from you please keep in touch so we know how your dad gets on my husband was caused by acid reflux over the years, the pet scan is where they make you radioactive they inject you with it,they tell you to avoid children mainly and no public transport for a few hours but it picks up exactly where it is,he had the petscan then the laparoscopy and they cut the cancer away if they get a clear enough margin he may not have to have the op and only chemo or radio keeping everything crossed for you and your family
  • Yes the doctors think its acid reflux that caused my dads too. He noticed it more when swallowing rice he said the rice was very difficult to digest compared to other foods!!

I will keep you updated and thanks again for your advice much appreciated.

    Take care
