I don't know what to expect

My lovely dad was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer last week following an endoscopy. The CT scan has shown that it has spread to the liver, tissue around the oesophagus and lymph nodes. The consultant says that he has had the cancer for a while and that they think he has six months left to live. We are in deep shock. He looks so healthy, is a good weight and apart from mild discomfort after eating there have been no other obvious symptoms.

We have a meeting with the oncologist in ten days to find out about  possible treatment to slow the cancer. It would really helpful if anyone can give advice about the questions that we need to ask at the meeting.

Many thanks

  • A warm welcome to Cancer Chat, cl1968.

I'm sorry to hear that your dad has been diagnosed with oesophageal cancer last week following an endoscopy. What a difficult situation this must be for all of you.

As this is something very new to you I thought I might link here some information we have on our website about oesophageal cancer and I hope this can be of some help.

Also, feel free to give our cancer nurses a call if you think speaking to them could help. Their lines are open Monday - Friday between 9 a.m - 5 p.m on 0808 800 4040.

Best wishes to you and your dad,
