I've had a little look on the forum and found a similar conversation between another member and one of our cancer nurses, Jean. It might be of some help and reassurance: Skin cancer. It explains a little bit about the difference between basal cell skin cancer (the most common type of skin cancer), and squamous cell skin cancer, the type of skin cancer that your family member has.
