Father in law cancer

My father in law was due to retire at the end of February 2018 when he was admitted to hospital with a chest infection. The doctors said he had pneumonia but have since diagnosed cancer. There’s been so many presumptions pancreatic, intestine, lung, stomach etc. He is currently on a bowel cancer ward, awaiting an endoscopy Monday / Tuesday. He appears to be hallucinating and in pain - he’s constipated badly and taking oromorph and Zomorph

    Hello Mrs Davies,

    Welcome to our forum.

I am so sorry to hear about your father-in-law's diagnosis and all the presumptions surrounding it.

I was diagnosed with breast cancer 8 years ago and had a second bout 7 years ago. This came just months after I had retired and was looking forward to doing all the travel that I was curtailed in doing because of my job. Sadly, this never happened and I can only get travel insurance for Europe these days. I am sure that your father-in-law had similar plans, which are now in tatters?

Can his care team not give him something more effective for the pain? It might be worth asking. I do hope that his endoscopy goes well this week and that it doesn't show up anything sinister.

Please keep in touch and let us know how he gets on. We are always here for you whenever you want to chat.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hello there, Mrsdavies07.  I am inclined to agree with Jolamine.  Pain should be controllable in this day and age although I realise that certain types of strong painkillers can cause constipation.  You need to grab hold of the doctor looking after your father-in-law and set out quite clearly (firmly but politely!) your concerns.  We tend to think that the doctors know what they are doing but to be honest some of them are so rushed trying to cope with more patients and less resources that it doesn't hurt to spell out your concerns to them.  Hope you can get this resolved.  Annie
