Colon Cancer

Hello,

This is my first post. In December 2017, I had my first colonoscopy, I'm 56 years old. I do not have this history in my family tree, I wasn't feeling sick just felt it was time for this test. My husband has had a couple and he always came back fine. Not so much for me. They found 2 large masses in my colon. In January 2018 I had a section of my colon removed, in the process the doctor found more cancer in one of my lymph nodes. I started chemo in February. I do chemo twice a month and after the chemo treatment in the "chair" I carry a pump with more chemo for 2 days. I have a port in my chest they connect the pump to. This is all very new to me and somewhat confusing. I never had any symptoms, never been (really) sick a day in my life. Besides some minor side effects, I still don't feel "sick". My next treatment is next week. I'm just nervous that this next treatment and ones after will change my whole being. I'm trying to stay positive, I'm still working and have custody of my 13 year old grandaughter. When your told you have the "C" word, life changes forever. I have shared my story with family and friends just so people can be aware, cancer don't care who you are. I'm not sure what to expect next but I'm hanging on.....

  • I just wanted to stop by and give you a warm welcome to Cancer Chat CarolynR although I'm sorry to hear about the reason that brings you here.

What you said about cancer changing your life forever is something that I'm sure will echo with many of our members and I hope that some of them will be stopping by shortly to share their experiences with you, as talking with those who can relate to what we are going through does help.

In the meantime feel free to post as much as you need, there is always someone here to listen.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi CarolynR

I am so glad that you don't feel sick.  When I had chemo I looked for a way to accept it emotionally because I read that acceptance was related to fewer side effects.  When I typed the word Chemotherapy all of a sudden I saw the word mother in the middle.  che-mother-apy. Mother energy therapy.  That helped me a lot.  I was diagnosed 10 years ago with  "incurable but treatable" cancer of the bone marrow called Multiple Myeloma (MM) I made a conscious decision to have my body create the best healing it possibly could.  So much is attitude and mindset.

I work with cancer patients in several hospitals where I give guided meditations and mandala drawing for cancer patients and friends... while they receive chemo or are waiting for treatments.  There is so much that can be done to foster a positive mindset.  I found that along with meditation, creative self-expression - even just coloring abstract designs is an amazing way to release the stress and find the calm that the body needs to maximize healing while minimizing side effects.   You can even do it with your granddaughter...

    Hope that helps
