merkel cell

Hi iam a newbie to all this,

my huuby has recently been diognosed with merkel cell carcinoma, it started with a very small lump after knocking his leg at work, it grew quite quickly and he went to have it taken off, when result came back he was told it was the very rare and  very aggressive merkel cell and he would have to have a wide local excision to make sure they got it all out.

He has just had the operation this week which icluded a skin graft as it is on his leg and also a sentinel node biopsy too, so now we have to wait four to six weeks for thr results of that.

Its a very worrying time waiting for results and because its rare dont really know if its likely it will have spread to lymph nodes. He has also had a ct scan which thank god came back clear. its just good to read good stuff from other people who have gone through this. it gives him hope that everything will be fine,

thanks in advance for any replies

    Hi Tracy,

A very warm welcome to Cancer Chat.

I am so sorry to hear about your hubby and his merkel cell carcinoma.  I have had 2 bouts of mucinous or coloid breast cancer, which is also very rare. I was told initially that it was one of the less aggressive forms of cancer, but I had a second bout the following year. I was told that this was very unusual with this form of cancer, but I guess that we are all individual cases..

The fact that your husband’s lesion grew quickly following the knock, means that ne has had it attended to quickly and has probably caught it early. The results of his CT scan are reassuring and I hope that the results of his sentinel node biopsy is also favorable.. I am not a medic, but I would imagine that lymph nodes can still become infected in this instance, but hope that they don’t.

Waiting is always one of the most difficult parts of a cancer journey. Try to distract yourselves by keeping busy during the next 6 weeks.

Please let us know when you get the results. We are always here for you both in the meantime.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Tracywd,

How is your husband doing? I noticed your post was over 2 years ago and seeing as how rare Merkel cell seems to be I'm struggling to find other experiences. How did his biopsy go? Hoping the surgery was successful for you both. My dad cannot have his removed - he has an unknown primary which has spread to his lymph nodes and hoping chemo will be successful.
