Lung cancer

Hi, My husband has been diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer he is only 30 years, it has already spread to liver and pelvic bones and spine. he is in extreme pain had 5 sessions of radiation feels very weak and sleeps most of the day. dr has given him tablets called oxycontin and a patch called sovenor for the pain. he hardly eats anything as he says that the food is burning his stomach and makes him feel nausea, is there anything that anyone can recommend and give me some recipes, he doesnt feel for blend food as he says it taste like its boiled neither does he want very spicy food either. The dr suggested we start with chemo next week, saying that they will not be able to cure him but can try and shrink the cells and control it. im too afraid to even ask the dr what is the life span with the chemo but he did say that if he doesnt have the chemo he will have months left.. its quite a bit for me to digest all at once as we also have two boys 3 years and 6 years they are so confused as to why their daddy spends the whole day in bed. will he feel like normal again after the chemo? im so afraid. i know that he has to eat but not sure what to make so that he actually puts it down and keeps it down.

  • Hello ayrts,

I'm sorry to hear the news about your husband. It sounds like it's a very difficult time for you all.

Does he have a specialist nurse that he's been allocated? It would be worth talking to them and asking for advice about diet. It may be that they are able to suggest medication to help with the nausea.

We do also have a team of nurses here at Cancer Research UK that you can call to talk to. They are available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040 or if you find in easier then you can post to them in our Ask the Nurses topic area.

Do keep in touch Ayrts and let us know how you are all managing.

    Best wishes,

  • There is information on the internet about dietary help for people with lung cancer. I realise you may have already tried this. Best wishes. Just search something like "Food for people with lung cancer".
