Low grade dyskarosis & HPV

Hi, I have had my smear test results back as low grade dyskaryosis and HPV virus. I have been really worried and googled it (defo shouldn't of googled) it said genital warts so I instantly panicked. I rang a helpline and they said with HPV in a smear test it is different to genital warts. I'v just been really upset and confused to what this actually means. I have to go for a colposcopy. Hopefully someone can help put my mind at ease over this. Thank you

  • Hello Lilly,

I'm sorry to hear you are worried about your test and what it means.  I believe I have read that  HPV does not cause genital warts, that those are from a different virus.  I have also read that HPV is very common these days - the tests you are having are GOOD because they will help you keep track of things and keep an eye on them. Try not to worry too much, the doctors are just following normal procedure. :)

    Hope this helps!

  • Hi Lilly284, and welcome to Cancer Chat.

I'm sorry to hear you're feeling upset and confused at the moment. I'm sharing a link to our website about cervical screenings, which includes some information about having a colposcopy, and might help in terms of what to expect next.

We have a little bit of information about HPV and warts on our website too, which states that "the types of HPV that cause warts are not the same types that cause cancer." You can read more here: HPV & cancer.

I also wanted to let you know that we have a team of cancer information nurses on-hand, if you have any questions, or want to talk to someone about your worries. You can reach them on 0808 800 4040 (Mon - Fri, 9am - 5pm).

As LauraP says, try not to worry too much - and feel free to keep posting here!

    Best wishes,

    Helen
