Chemotherapy

I was diagnosed with breast cancer recently and had a lumpectomy to remove cancer lump plus take cells around lump also blue dye injected to trace lymph nodes.

i waited 10 days for results and was told this week cells were clear and lymph nodes clear.

Next step is to discuss treatment with the oncologist for chemotherapy and radiation treatment.

Am discussing with

However I am ok about the radiation treatment which is localised to my breast but am unsure about the chemotherapy.

I saw what chemotherapy did to my husband last year after his bowel cancer he had hi

bowel removed, a stoma bag plus radiation treatment and tablet chemotherapy.  He did quite well considering and the last part of his treatment was 6 sessions of intravenous chemotherapy.  He had 2 lots and side effects were feeling cold, tingling in his face, nausea feeling and poor appetite.  After his 3rd dose he starting vomiting green fluid I took him to Hospital he was very tired and couldn't walk so I parked at the front of the hospital went in to get a wheelchair and managed to put him in it and wheel him inside.  I'd rang ahead and they knew he was coming he was picked up by a nurse and wheeled into the unit.  After I'd parked my car correctly I went in and he was rushed through and put on fluid drips and given medication.  He was admitted to a ward and a consultant was dealing with him.  Each day he got worse after pumping him with strong drugs etc he was transferred to HDU and continued to get worse I was told he had  sepsis the infection was getting worse and winning against the medication.  After 8 days in Hospital I was told his organs were shutting down I called the family in and 2 days later he died.  It was a year since his first diagnosis.  He had to have chemotherapy for his cancer.

The cancer didn't kill him it was the infection due to poor immune system through chemotherapy.

Now as I have caught mine early and the cells and lymph nodes are clear I feel I don't need to have the chemotherapy but am ok with the radiotherapy.

I am discussing with oncologist next week.

  • I had a lumpectomy back in August together with lymph node removal, results came back the same s yours, clear. I have to say that mine was tiny so getting it all should never have been a problem. I’m no on tamoxifen. Due to switch to an ai after 1-2 years and hav just completed three weeks of radiotherapy. Chemo might not be regarded as necessary but I’m sure your Oncologist will discuss that with you, might depnd as well on the type of cancer you have and whether it’s hormone receptive or not. Don’t know if any of this helps or not but chemo isn’t Always given I think is what I’m trying to say.
  • Hi,

So sorry to read about your situation and the awful end of life experience that your husband had, sepsis is a horrible "complication" and seems to be affecting more patients than ever - even those who haven't had chemo. No wonder you have doubts about having chemo yourself.

Your situation is far different to his though and it is highly unlikely that you will be prescribed the same chemo as he was given. It would be worth talking about your understandable concerns with your oncologist but the decision is yours to make and you are well within your rights to refuse chemo if it is offered. It is your body after all.

    Best wishes
    Dave

  • Hi Carol

I too was recently diagnosed with BC. I had lumpectomy with clear margins and nodes) I’ve  just had my 4th session of radiotherapy ( I am having  15 sessions over 3 wks). When I had my appointment with the surgeon and he said he was referring me to an oncologist I asked what treatment I was likely to need. He said although he did not understand the dark arts of oncology:-) I would likely have 3 wks radiotherapy - he was spot on.

I see u said you have been referred to discuss chemotherapy and radiotherapy- were u told it was likely you would need chemo? Of course if your plan does indicate  chemo - as mentioned earlier you can of course refuse.

I hope next weeks meeting is reassuring Carol and will b thinking of you

    take care

    Sandra x

  • From Carolw330

Have seen oncologist and have recommended chemotherapy of 12 sessions once a week for 12 weeks.  Blood tests each week before chemo and at end of 12 weeks to have radiotherapy for 3 weeks Mon- Fri

As I’m triple negative and no receptors chemo is only option.  To have a PICC line fitted Tuesday with Chemo to start Wednesday.

Not looking forward to any of it especially the side effects (hopefully not many) but feel I have to fight anything still around.

    Will update after treatment.

  • Good luck with the chemo :-)
