Terminal Colon Cancer

Hi all,

I had a colonoscopy Monday due to feeling a little sick and some blood in my stool the last couple of months. This followed some blood tests with high liver enzime markers along with being anemic and high inflation markers. They found a tumour in colon that we inititialy hoped could be treated. Following a virtual colonoscopy / ct scan it has now become apparent that it has spread into my liver and is very advanced. I have been told it's very unlikely I can survive this and the aim is to extend my life. I have been given 6 months without treatment. We don't know with treatment. I hope to prove them wrong but have my feet on the ground. I am 41 very happily Married with 2 children. 2 loving brother who are my best friends.Amazing loving parents. My family have been amazing. I am so saddened that they are going to have to watch me go through this.

This time last year I was riding 200 miles a week on my bike. I am amazed how advanced your cancer can get without much in the way of symptoms.

I want to explore any option to help my battle. Please let me know if you have any thoughts or have heard of any pioneering options. I know it's along shot but I will keep trying to find anything to improve my options.

Good luck to you all. X

  • Hi Barrys,

just wanted to drop you a note and say keep positive. I'm going through something similar, albeit i am undergoing treatment (initial chemo/radiotherapy, surgery, more chemo starting on Tuesday with an biological agent to hopefully treat the secondary cancer in my liver to prepare for more surgery). still cancer cells in the bowel too, so no illeostomy reversal, probably lose more bowel and have a colostomy. But, i'm a "whatever it takes" person.

I have also looked around at alternatives, but have been advised by friends in the field that the NHS are the best to deal with when it comes to oncology/chemo treatments. So see what they advise first. Otherwise, you're likely to be so confused with whats available through the NHS and even more so through alternative therapies.

also like you, i'm more late 40's but with a young close family. i worry more about what they are going through and them having to see me through this period of life! stay postive, lots of hugs and open talking with them all.

i wish you all the best on your journey, welcome to the forum and hopefully you can find treatments and answers to keep you going for a long long time.

  • Hi Sean.

Thank you for your message. I also am a what ever it takes Kind of guy. For me as it so early there is alot I am still trying to understand. Why is it inoperable and is there any chance of that verdict being evaluated in the future with a good response to chemo. I am currently waiting for the cancer tests to come back and my oncologist to tell me what is suitable. Like most people I guess I want to feel we are hitting it as hard possible.

Thank you for you advice regarding trying to find other options. I am starting to see that the NHS is the only real option. I would like another oncologist from a leading hospital to look at my case for a 2nd opinion down the road regarding ruling out surgery.

It is heart warming  to hear from someone in a similar situation. I hope you have positive results with your treatment and enjoy every moment you have with you family.

Stay strong in the mind and hopefully the body will follow.

    Best Wishes

    Barry
