Mesothelioma

Hi my father was diognosed 18 months ago and has now been told he has about 8 months left. Feel quite numb an the moment. Busy planing trips and weekends away while he is still feeling well enough. Seems like a bad dream. Have to choose the right time to tell my 7 year old son. But when is the right time?

     Hi Megtara,,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I am so sorry to hear about your Dad’s diagnosis and prognosis. It sounds as if you are doing the right things with him by taking him on trips whilst he is able to travel. It is so hard to be the strong one when your heart is breaking at the thought of losing a loved one. I have been here with my own Mum and know only too well how heart-breaking it is.

You are trying to put a positive slant on things for the sake of your Dad. It is so much easier for both of you to cope with if you can realize this positivity, although it is not easy to do. If you want to read some of the posts on breaking the news to a child there are over 7,000 posts on this topic. Click on the search engine situated on the blue ribbon at the top of this page and enter ‘Breaking the news to children’. You may find some of these conversations useful to read before you tell your son.

Please keep us informed about how your Dad is getting on and remember that there is always someone here whenever you feel like talking.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Caz,

Numb is a good word, or stunned. I'm there too. My brother only just was diagnosed last week and is already stage 4 and inoperable. I'm so sorry about your dad. I'll pray you find a good way to tell your son.
