Worried they aren't reacting quick enough

My 72 year old mother was diagnosed with cancer 2 weeks ago after having lost significant amounts of weight, she went for a CT scan and they found it in her liver, lung, ovaries/womb and stomach. A week later she went for an ultrascan and a camera into a womb where they said was a 'mass'.

She's just had an appointment with an oncologist and now they want to do a biopsy which he said would be in 1-2 weeks and then 10 days until the results.

She weighs just 7 stone, 3 stone lighter than she was 12 weeks ago, she isn't eating, sleeps most of the time and is really spacey.

Will she even last to go to these tests?! They don't seem to have any urgency about them, does this mean they don't see the point? Is this them saying there's only one outcome?

  • Hello

i am sorry to read your post and can sympathise with you as my husband has only just been diagnosed. We saw an oncologist on 11 July and were told that my husband needed biopsies and a PET Scan both needed to be done in London and would be within 2 weeks. He got a phone call within 2 days and the tests were done on 17 and 18 July. The scan results were back to him within 48 hours and biopsy results due on Monday. In our experience they told us the longest times it would be but actually I feel that they move as quickly as they can , the waiting is awful but I hope for you and your mum that this is also the case for you.

For us if feels as if we are trapped in a nightmare situation and not in control of anything but we are trying to trust that the medical staff are doing everything they can to help.

Sending love to you both and hope that you hear about appointments very soon for your mum. Let us know when you hear something, you are not alone, we are all in this  horrible fight together.

    Love Christine. X

  • Hi,

Sorry to read about your Mum. The timescales you describe are fairly typical, regardless of age - especially when biopsies have been needed. The perceived lack of urgency is about the most frustrating part of the cancer experience.

    Best wishes

    Dave

  • I am sorry to hear your news, but dont take the time scale personally or read into it to much, this can be very hard to do when you only want to know the outcome and treatment plan (if required). I started tests myself around 7 weeks ago, each week i was in for a test etc and now I am still waiting for the treatment plan as the staging the hospital (a large city) has sent my information to the largest cancer centre in my county for a second opinion, as my mri is showing older cancer than my biospys and they want to have a true reading before my operation... I know this is totally different than your mums case. Just try and stay focused and strong, making a diary of tests done and as they are done helps for questions when results come back etc...  any test required within a 2 week time frame is classed as urgent ... and in most cases they have to work through methodically so they can have a true picture of the treatment plan required.. do take care and huge hugs
