New diagnosis of rectal tumour

Hi my name is Charlotte (38), and my husband, Charlie (39) has just been diagnosed with a rectal tumour. We have two gorgeous boys 3yrs old and 1 yr old. My husband had been experiencing loose bowel movements and more frequent need to go for about 6 weeks, went to GP and he ordered a colonoscopy. That was two days ago, and we have been told there are lots of polyps and a few cm mass/tumour, most likely to be cancer. It is about 8 cm up.  Biopsy taken, MRI on friday, and another colonoscopy next week. I am frightened to death!!! We both can not believe it. He goes to the gym 5x a week, he eats really healthy foods, he drinks (on weekends) but does not smoke. How has this happened?? I`m really struggling with all this. I have cried pretty much every day since the diagnosis. All i can think is the worst. Does the fact he only had symptoms for about 6 weeks mean its low scale? how have other partners managed to stay strong, i`m falling apart

  • Hi,

They found a 5cm maligmant tumour in my dads bowel last week. he's had a all tests now and is going in tomorrow to find out all he knows to know. I'm petfified for him, never felt like this before in my life.. i'm 34 have a husband and 2 children but i've never been so scared for my dad.

He's had open heart surgery 20 years ago, pneumonia 5 years ago and more recently 4 weeks ago - its not fair that its him again andf this time with the monsterous C!

This disease is so cruel - i just hope its caught early enough. The dark what if's i'm thinking are the worst!!

  • Hi.

I hope it was good news for you and your dad but Can I ask how your father is got on please?

    Thank you.

  • Hi Parmy,

They caught it pretty early thank goodness, he had the tumour removed but unfotunately was in intensive care with pnemonia again as his body wasnt able to deal with his operation .. after a month he was luckily out and in terms of his operation has been amazing. unfortunately out of 16 lymph nodes 2-3 had signs of cancer still knocking around so started chemo last week. He's got 4 sessions at hospital every 3 weeks and takes tablets inbetween. He's been tired, cold and knocked off but it could be worse so im hoping it stays this way. just praying nothing has spread and we can say bye to all of this.

  • Hi Charlotte,

I hope everything has gone okay with your husband and he had made a full recovery. My husband has been told the same as you were and we’re having to wait nearly 2 weeks for the results to what stage he is at. Would you be able to tell me what stage your husband was at when they found the 8cm tumour

    thanks x

Can any one offer me any advice if this has happened to them or someone they know

  • Hi I've been googling for the past few days and this thread popped up, so I hope you don't mind me jumping in here as I'm unsure who else to ask. I'm waiting for a referral for exploratory colonoscopy, but have dismissed symptoms for a few years and now I'm going out of my mind with worry. My symptoms I'd passed off as anxiety but it feels as though I have something in my bowel/rectum, it's not a constant sensation, it's only occasional but is increasing in frequency. I also passed a small amount of blood with bowel movement last week which prompted me to visit my GP, she has diagnosed a couple of haemorrhoids but said these weren't the source of the bleeding it must be higher up, I've had no bleeding since. Has anyone else had this sensation like an annoying toothache?

  • Hi BrownMrs,

I had some blood in my poo back in October but no other symptoms and it only happened once. I also had a sharp pain in my right side which took my breath away and was unable to move for 30 mins.
I went to A&E as I then started getting a burning sensation all over my upper back! Blood tests and x ray we're normal, since October I haven't felt normal. I am extremely tired all the time and find myself drifting off all through the day.
About 4 weeks ago I started having problems going a toilet, it was loose then diahrea then loose again and had a lot of visible white mucus on top and blood running through.I have had non stop drenching night sweats since December and even sleeping naked leaves me soaked. I had bloods done at the doctors which showed low folate which the doctor didn't seem concerned about, but she did refer me for a colonoscopy. My maternal nan died of colon cancer, my maternal grandad had colon cancer but had a successful op and a bag for a short while. My mums 2 sisters had polyps removed and one died of PMP Cancer and my mum had polyps removed. As you can imagine I am panicking at the minute, my colonoscopy is on 24th Feb.
I have the same feeling you describe, it constantly feels like something is in my bum, like pressure.

  • Hi dannigirl88

It was a sigmoidoscopy I ended up having and was given the all clear there and then, the pressure I could feel was more than likely haemorrhoids which I am self treating, bloods have since come back normal too. They did say I had some diverticula which they aren't going to treat. It is so easy to automatically think the worst, but I am very grateful to my GP for taking my concerns seriously and getting it checked out pretty quickly. Try not to think the worst, I know it's hard and easy for me to say now, but stress and worry can also take its toll on our physical and mental health. Good luck with your test x

  • Hi Charlotte,

I am so sorry you and your family are in this situation.  My husband too has colorectal cancer, though he's a bit older than Charlie.  We all get cancer a couple of hundred times a year you know if Bill Bryson is to be believed.  They are just regular cells which go rogue and start doing stupid things, its really unfair.

You need to find out where in the rectal passage the tumour is as they might be able to operate on the tumour and rejoin the rectal passage.  So when things calm down, and you have test results, ask if this is an option. Also we had a PET scan done which shows up any dodgy cells through the whole body, and we are having a follow up liver mri because he also has tumours in his liver.  The plan is to shrink the rectal and liver tumours with chemotherapy, and then surgery to remove the tumours, followed by more chemo.

Probably bombarding you at the moment.  It is frightening, and your brain starts going overtime I know with all the what ifs.  But really try to keep your mind on today.  Yes he may have it, but they can treat cancer.  Keep up the healthy lifestyle, it will do wonders.  Pick one or two good friends (each) and talk to them, you wil both need an outlet away from each other.

    Good luck.
