My hubby has recently been diagnosed with penile cancer. He won't ask any questions about his diagnosis, so I really want to know if he could be cancer free soon?

Hi Aileem, I was diagnosed and treated last year for penile cancer. It's scary stuff for us blokes, and tough on our partners as well. And, as I'm sure you know, this isn't the sort of stuff us blokes like to discuss.
I don't have any medical qualifications so will limit myself to talking about my case. I was terrified on diagnosis, which followed a biopsy on the glans (head) of my penis. But because the cancer was not very invasive the treatment I needed to receive was limited. I had the top layers of cells removed, then had a split skin graft. This is a skin graft, taken from the thigh, which is very thin. This means that the wound on the thigh then heals by itself. I also had a small number of lymph nodes in my groin removed, to check for any cancer spread. If these nodes are clear, and mine were, then it is unlikely that there is any other spread. No further treatment is necessary.
I am now more than 6 months into 5 year follow up plan. This consists of ultrasound on my lymph nodes in the groin, and physical examination of the penis itself. My prognosis is very good, but I have certainly learnt the meaning of the word 'scanxiety.'
Aileem, I hope that your husband's cancer is not too nasty and can be treated easily, like mine.
Finally, this sort of cancer is very rare. This means that it is possible that your specialist may not have much experience, simply because there are so few cases. This makes it particularly important that you seek a second opinion if you are not 100% comfortable with any proposed treatment plan.
I wish you and your husand the very best of luck, Aileem. And do not hesitate to ask me any question that you wish.
Aileem. My ex husband had this cancer and was treated by one of only two experts of this cancer in the UK at the time. Our local hospital has urology cancer specialists but no one who really understood this rare cancer.
Be kind to yourself and your husband. It’s a very personal and difficult cancer to mentally and physically deal with but with correct oncology treatment methods and counselling you will get through this.
I wish you all the very best x
