Prostate cancer

hi everyone, my (just turned) 70 year old dad has just been diagnosed with prostate cancer. It all started from a sore back in January, he went to the docs and they took bloods, he was told that his PSA was 318! within a week and a half he went for a biopsy. After his examination the urologist said that the prostate was rock hard and that it's been there for quite sometime. He's just had a scan today to check his organs and has a bone scan booked for Monday then back to see the urologist on Tuesday, this waiting around is killing me! It's the unknown, has it spread? is it in the bones? What treatment is needed... oh all the questions are so draining! I can't help think the worse surely that's normal?! As soon as you say the 'C' word that's it! I was so surprised when the urologist told us that 1 in 4 men get it.... WHAT!!! I don't understand why there isn't some sort of screening for prostate cancer, if a blood test can tell the gp that's it's cancer then why not?! I feel so lost and alone just now, my siblings live quite some distance so it's just me, (youngest out of 3), I lost my mum 15 years ago when I was 20, I'm not ready to loose my dad aswell :(

  • Hi Letitia,

My dad was diagnosed with prostate cancer last year around this time, so I can completely relate to how you're feeling. My dad is only 64, so we were shocked to learn about it. And yes, 1 in 4 men get it and we didn't even know that until doing research ourselves! I wish there was more awareness for this cancer, as we didn't know about the blood test you can take each year. My dad's situation sounds similar to yours, so if you would like we can talk about it. I was only 25 when finding out about my dad, so it's been very hard to come to terms with this. I just wanted you to know that you aren't alone, and there have been a lot of supportive people on this site who have helped me in this past year. Please keep us updated!
