Breast Cancer Metastasis

My name is Mary, I had breast cancer 10years ago.
I have been diagnosed with breast Cancer Metastasis, 2 in my spine, 1 in my leg. I have been told I will be taking Denosumab every 4 weeks. I have yet to find out what other treatment I will require. It has been 6 months since I was diagnosed, but seeing oncologist in 2 weeks. I have totally changed my lifestyle of eating. I only eat vegetables, fruit, no red meat, very little fish and chicken, no dairy. I have no pain or symptoms, I am in a dilemma as to have treatment or not. Can anyone advise me please, I am so frightened of the treatment. I am 65

    Hi Mary,

I am so sorry to hear about your latest diagnosis. Your question is a difficult one. Most of us on this site have little or no medical training, so cannot really answer your question. The best thing to do would be for you to talk to your care team and, taking into account their advice, make your own decision about what you want to do.

I know how difficult it is to refuse treatment. I eventually refused radiotherapy and looking back on things now, I don't think that I would have been hapy to have based my decision on non medical people, much and all as I respect all of the people on this site.

If things went well without treatment you would possibly be quite happy, but how would you feel if the cancer progressed? I think that I would then be quite annoyed with the advice given, whereas if I had taken the decision myself, I would feel that I made a bad call, but I couldn't blame anyone else.

Hopefully, someone who has already faced this dilemma will come along to reply to you.

Here's wishing you all the best whatever your decision and hoping and praying that you make the right one.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thank you for your reply Jolamine. I think part of the dilemma is because I have already waited for nearly 6 months since I had the first MRI. No one has really spoken to me about it, so I have had lots of time to think! Things went wrong from the start a whole month was lost because the results of the MRI went to the wrong doctor. The I had CT scans etc. Then they decided I needed a biopsy, 6 weeks went buy because the neurosurgeon was on holiday, then the doctor doing the biopsy was on holiday. And so it goes on. But this time has given me time to totally change my diet, I have lost a stone and everyone tells me how well I look, I have researched a lot on alternative ways of treating it. I am so afraid of all the side effects from Denosumab which I will eventually be on. I agree with you only I can make this decision, thank you so much for your advice

    Hi Mary,

I'm sorry that I cannot offer you any more helpful advice. You seem to have had a real run of incompetences and I can fully understand why you are so concerned. You have done well to lose a stone and I'm sure that you feel better for it. I really piled on weight with my medication over the past six years. Last year I took mysel to task and I have now lost 5 stones - Mind you I still have as much to lose again, but I do feel better for losing it.

Have you found any alternative treatments that appeal to you? Why not make a list of all your questions for your consultant? Bring this with you to your appointment and get someone to accompany you. Ask them to write down the answers to your questions. We only remember a small proportion of what is said at an appointment because we are so up tight at the time. Don't be afraid to discuss alternative therapies with him too, as  he can refer you on to a specialist in this field if you decide that this is the way you want to treat it.

I hope that your visit wiith the Oncologist goes well and that you come out from your appointment happy with the treatment choice you make. I shall be away from my computer for 2 weeks, but shall catch up on your update as soon as I am back on line.

    Thinking of you meanwhile,

    Jolamine xx
