Bowel cancer

Hi, I had an op 3 weeks ago today to remove a tumour from my sigmoid colon. The op went well and I am making a good recovery. Now waiting to hear about chemo.

If you are offered screening for bowel cancer please take the tests which could save your life! I am only 56 and the diagnosis came as a complete shock. It can affect people of all ages but can be treated if caught early enough. I remain positive and hopeful that I can recover.

Please say hello if you are also living with bowel cancer.

  • Hi, I feel like I’m still recovering but I’m at the end of a very lengthy chemo treatment which I started last July so it will take a while for my body to recover from the chemo. It’s really difficult to put timescales on recovery as everyone is different and I tend to slide up and down the wellness to illness continuum. I made good progress after the surgery and was soon able to drive and do all the usual everyday things you tend to take for granted. The main thing for me was to set small achievable goals each day/week and work towards them . Hope things go well for you.
  • I had surgery in April and commenced chemo last July. I have done ok and am back at work . Everyone is different and is offered different treatment plans dependent on the clinical presentation. Your cancer sounds to have been caught at an early stage which is great regarding recovery and prognosis. Hope it goes well for you .

  • Hi I had a low anterior resection beginning of August 2017 I was in hospital for 6 days. The 2nd week I was going on short little walks. My biggest anxiety was when I was waiting for the operation.I started chemo Oct 17 it's a 6 month course. Its about little steps and small goals.Having a supportive group of friends helps to make things easier.Everyone has a unique journey will bowel cancer.I found the beating bowel cancer forum really good.It made me feel less isolated. All the best
  • Hi Jo I too am 56 and diagnosed with colon cancer in November. Had surgery and now on chemo. Such a shock as you say. Life changes overnight. Hope you get a plan going forward soon Lesley x
