Need advice

hi we were told 4 days that my mum has lung cancer which has come has a huge shock to us all, we go back to hospital on Friday to talk about treatment which is so scary.I have a 13 year old daughter who adores my mum and sees everyday, she knows mum is sick but not that it is cancer how do I tell her please help me.xxx

  • Hi Sophie33,

I'm really sorry to hear that your mum has been diagnosed with lung cancer and I just wanted to stop by and wish you and your mum good luck for the appointment she has tomorrow to discuss treatment.

Many members here have also sought advice on the best way to tell young children that a family member has cancer and hopefully some of them will reply soon to share their advice. Children do have a tendency to sense when something is wrong and some members have found that honesty is the best policy so maybe after the appointment tomorrow you can sit down with your daughter and let her know the relevant parts of what was discussed just so she knows what is going on.

Come back and let us know how the appointment goes Sophie. We'll be thinking of you.

    Wishing you all the best,

  • this is very shocking news for all family members...but we have to accept n cope it....in which stage ur mom

  • Hi we find out tomorrow what stage the cancer is at xxx

  • Hi, I was recently diagnosed with breast cancer and have 17 yr old and 13yr old daughters. I didn't tell them until a few days before my treatment began as I didn't think they needed to be worried all that time. We sat them down and explained what had happened, that there was a treatment, but that I would be poorly. They got most upset at the idea I would lose my hair! I had mt first chemo treatment yesterday, apart from being sick I've been ok, so don't really think it's hit them (or me) yet tbh. Be honest with your daughter, answer her questions and include her in your conversations, the truth is sometimes less scary than their imagination.....and with google, she'll find out any way. X
  • Hi mum starts treatment in 2 weeks but was told that with treatment she will only last 18 months not taking the news very well.xx could she last longer xxx

  • I'm sorry to hear that Sophie.

Our cancer nurses usually say that everyone is different in these situations so there is a chance but no guarantee. If you would like to chat to them about your mum's situation and treatment in more detail do give them a call. They're available Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m on 0808 800 4040, which is free from a UK landline.

    Best wishes to you both,
