Adjuvant chemotherapy

Hi iam going to have adjuvant chemotherapy with oxaliplatin, 5 FU and folicilic acid for bowel cancer .Please can  anyone give me some feedback with regards to how they cope during chemotherapy as i am really anxious .

  • Hello,

I’m on Folfox treatment and I have had six cycles now. Personally for me it’s been hell but that’s because I’m stage 4 and the tumour had reduced my bowel so I was getting blocked and in serve pain! I had to have a stent put in my colon to resolve this which is thankfully has.

From the Folfox drugs cold and numb fingers and feet are normal along with a numb tongue, lips and tightening of the throat when cold. I would advise getting some good gloves and a scarth. For me this lasts about a week. Some hair thinning and my skin is quite rashy on the face. My left thigh has also gone numb from the Oxaliplatin which has caused nerve damage.

My treatment is two hours followed by a flush at hospital and then the 5FU pump is on for two days. Complete pain when it comes to showering!

After a few days i always feel very tired and i really dont want to do anything, ensure you take the steriods as your appetite may vanish but the steriods should help with this. Recently it has made me very gassy/windy which it hadn't previously.

Ensure you rest plenty ideally during the beginning of the day to try and not ruin your night routine.
