Diagnosis time private vs nhs

Hi all

Just the news that my girfriend (44) may have either multiple myeloma or lymphoma.

We have been given an urgent 2 week referal to a specialist at kingston hospital (surrey) but i just wondered what kind of time frame a typical diagnosis would take? Obviously we need to first meet with the consultant and then wait for the tests / results. So i was considering just getting the acual diagnosis done privately within 48hrs??

Easter weekend too which isnt helping with the nerves...

Any help appreciated.

  • Hi Pete,

Sorry to hear of the news about your girlfriend. I don't know about the difference between NHS vs Private or if any is better or worse but I do know that it's very important to get an accurate diagnoses in the case of lymphoma. My mom had the non-hodgkins type of lymphoma and it is a very complex cancer with over 30+ sub-types. So even though it might take longer to diagnose it's very important to get it right so that the most appropriate and effective treatment can be implimented.

So therefore I don't know if faster = better in this case. I hope people with more experience can chime in and give you more info. I found this article that might help your decision: www.cancerresearchuk.org/.../is-private-treatment-better-than-nhs

I hope nothing but the best for you and your girlfriend, please keep us informed of the outcome when you can.

    God Bless

  • Good evening My partner has recently been diagnosed with stomach cancer. Waiting is all we've done. We've even done parts under BUPA and still had to wait! We've an appointment 27th April for chemo. We've asked if can be seen sooner under BUPA and got told yeah.....THE DAY BEFORE?

  • Thanks for the reply

I was hoping to get the diagnosis done privately at a hospital in london. Was looking online but the reviews are rather hit and miss!

Trying to look for a haematology dr. To get tests done asap.

    Thanks again!

  • I've gallbladder cancer. The treatment I have had from the Luton and Dunstable hospital has been faultless but everything does take time. Have scan, and then back to discuss results in 2 weeks (sometimes quicker). Some of the specialists I've seen no doubt do private work as well. Would I have gone private if I had insurance, probably yes but as I've said I can't fault the NHS. Good luck to your girlfriend.
