Cancer Spread?

Hi

My dad was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer 25 days ago. In that time he's had scans, endoscopies and laser surgery to burn the tumour away. Today he gets his reults of his PET scan to see if the cancer has spread, and then an estimate prognosis. I'm very worried. When we got the diagnosis, the doctor said they believe it to be  curable, but there were 2 strands coming off the original tumour and they needed the scan to see where they went. So whilst we are thinking the best as the doctor seemed fairly calm about it, there is a very real possibility it has spread elsewhere. I can't fault the NHS staff as it's not even been a month yet and they're already planning on starting chemo within a week or so, but as everyone probably knows, even waiting for a day when cancer is concerned is a day too long. I'm not going to this appointment, I've come to work to keep busy and mum will go with him.
