Non small cell lung cancer

Hi everyone I'm new to this superb site! Just a little bit of info I'm looking for just wondered if anyone can help!!!

Here goes.....my dad has recently been diagnosed with non small cell lung cancer, he's had a ct scan and a broncoscopy, we had a lung nurse that came round and told us the heartbreaking news, but...she said it's treatable :-) anyway....a couple of weeks back we went to Christie for his appointment regarding him having chemo, the consultant came in and said it's treatable but will never go!! Then ano there doctor came in an said "would u like a time?" So dad said yes (thinking he was talking about chemo) he gave my dad 3months to live without treatment and a year with treatment!!! Well it was like he stood up and booted us all in the stomach, he's currently waiting for a whole body ct scan and a biopsy on his thyroid, and also they have sent his lung biopsy off to see if he can have any of the new trials, all the docs have said my dad is really fit and can't believe he's not got 1 of the signs of lung cancer!!! I just can't get my head around it getting told 1 thing then being hit with the time scale, after everyone only being able to look at the same scans and stuff everything seems to take so long esp given my dad's time scale ....please if anyone can shed any light on this would really appreciate  it xxx

  • Hi Linzi,

Welcome to Cancer Chat although I'm really sorry to hear about your dad's diagnosis and what happened. I would recommend giving our cancer nurses a call to talk this through with them as they may be able to give some insight in to this situation. Their freephone number is 0808 800 4040, and are available Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

I know there have been previous discussions on the forum about non small cell lung cancer that you can find and join in on by using the 'search forum' option above. Don't be afraid of saying hello as our members are a lovely, supportive bunch and will be more than willing to do what they can to help.

Best wishes to you and your dad Linzi,

  • Hello, i'm so sorry to hear that your dad has been diagnosed with NSCLC. I'm my opinion no one should put a timeline on life, we are all different, ages, fitness levels and how our bodies are dealing with cancer , and how we deal with diagnosis mentally. Take each stage as it comes, you are now awaiting biopsy results, build Dad up with nourishing food to prepare for treatment, don't Google too much most of the info is very outdated now and they are making tremendous steps each and everyday. Lung cancer even at stage 4 is controllable and treatable, there are many many treatments. I'm 45 and was diagnosed with NSCLC on 1st Feb, small tumour in lung with a couple of spots on my liver and a spot on my breastbone. They have never told me I'm stage 4 but I am because it's metastatic and they have never given me a prognosis yet. And i don't want them to! I too am very fit a healthy and they can't understand why I don't show any symptoms. They are baffled. Started my first Chemo two weeks ago and flew through that too. I'm a very busy Mum so that keeps me on my toes and what keeps me going. Much strength to you and your Dad.
