Advise needed very worried daughter!

I'm looking for a bit of advise if possible? My 63 year old mom was diagnosed with kidney cancer 2.5 years ago she had her kidney removed and was cancer free. She has been having routine scans every 6 months. These scans have been clear until December where the doctors found a shadow on the outside of her lung she was told to have another scan in February and come back in March to see if it had grown. Today my mom got her results and was told it had grown slightly and they would be treating her with tablets. My worry is that my mom trying to protect my feelings as I'm currently 9 months pregnant is not telling me the whole truth. I have never heard of these drugs and she can't explain to me why she isn't having an operation to remove the tumour which is apparently just outside the lung and the size of a pea. Surely if it's not bad like she is making out they could remove the tumour or try chemo?  I'm wondering if anyone has any experience of these drugs and was there a reason you were given them rather than other treatments? My worry is that it's untreatable or worse than she says I'd much rather know :-(

  • Welcome to the forum Nicola.

I'm sorry to hear about the situation you and your mum find yourself in at the moment. Have you sat down with your mum and told her how you feel? If she knows you're ok with knowing then she may feel more at ease telling you more about her diagnosis (if she hasn't told you everything already that is). Also, if your mum is unsure why she is having the tablets instead of an operation maybe you could both book an appointment to speak to her medical team or GP to find out and ask them the other questions that are on your mind.

I hope you get to meet other members who have been in a similar situation soon Nicola but in the meantime do have a look around to find other discussions connected to this by using the 'search forum' option above. Our cancer nurses are only a phone call away as well. If you'd like to chat to them about your mum's situation do give them a call next week on 0808 800 4040. This number is free to call from a UK landline and is open Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

Best wishes to you both and I hope all goes well with the arrival of your little one :)
