1b Melanoma Diagnosis

After much to ing and fro ing between Doctors, I finally has a pink patch removed from my shoulder on 19th Jan this year. On Feb 8th I was told it was a 1b melanoma. They have it all and I will have the wide excision on Friday to be sure! In 3 months, (assuming the wide excision comes back clear) I will start my 3 monthly check with the Specialist nurses. Which is great.

The thing is I have never had my body checked over, and I believe I have another on the front of my body, which has made me really stressed. I spoke with the nurse, who told me to show the surgeon on Friday. and that they would make another appointment if they think it needs to be removed. I know it isn't long to wait, but I'm thinking, what if it is another one, what if there are more?

I feel that time is crucial as my history of living abroad until I was in my twenties, at a time when sunscreen didn't exist, puts me at high risk, as I have very fair skin.

I have made an appointment with my GP to see whether I can get a proper overall assessment on the NHS, or if I just have to wait. It is all rather stressful. Does anyone else have a similar experience?

  • Welcome to the Cancer Chat forum, Jo.A. Fingers firmly crossed for clear borders after your WLE on Friday! Be sure to rest-up afterwards and, if you feel able to, let us know how you got on.

I think you are doing absolutely the right thing in making an appointment with your GP to discuss further assessment. Talking to your surgeon on Friday is also a good idea too, as they will be able to take a look at the patch you're concerned about.

I know there have been a few other people who've posted here recently about having melanoma - I remember [@Poppy31]‍- for example - was awaiting results. Hopefully, someone will be along soon to chat.

In the meantime, I would also suggest giving our team of cancer nurses a call if you'd like to ask them any questions about what is available on the NHS - you can reach them on 0808 800 4040.

Wishing you all the best for Friday; we're thinking of you.

  • Hi, Thanks for replying Helen. I had my WLE yesterday. They called in one of the Consultants who quickly checked the moles I was concerned about. He agreed that I should have the one under my left breast removal immediately. So they just got on with it. So I wound up having the biopsy as well as the WLE. I had planned to go back to work (desk job) after but as I was feeling shaky went home instead. When the local wore off it was pretty sore. Especially the WLE, but the relief is huge. Everything crossed for the results now! X
