Lymphoma stage 4

Hi my father has been diagnosed today with stage 4 lymphoma. He is 77 years old. I am absolutely terrified after we received the news today. My father has been complaining of pain around his neck and abnormal bloating feeling over the last few years. Every time we went A+E they ran an ECG test and blood tests and said he was fine and sent him home. After much anticipation the GP ordered a neck ultrasound which showed swollen lymph glands and followed by a bone marrow biopsy we got the devastating news today. The doctors said this type of cancer was treatable with intent to cure? Please if anyone can relate to this do speak with me so I can understand this a bit more and could also do with all your support

  • Hello Aysha and a big welcome to Cancer Chat,

I am sorry to hear that your dad was diagnosed only a few days ago with Stage 4 Lymphoma. It must have been a shock for you to receive the news and mostly unexpected as his previous test results had been good. It's good though that the GP ordered the ultrasound and got to the bottom of the problem and that you now know what is going on so that your dad can start his treatment. You must be reassured by the doctors' words that this type of cancer is treatable. You can find some information on lymphoma here  which may be useful to you and help you understand this type of cancer.

Do you know whether your father has Hodgkin Lymphoma or Non Hodgkin Lymphoma as there are two different types?

I hope you will meet others here who have been affected by lymphoma and who will be happy to come and offer you support and share their story with you.

    Best wishes,

    Lucie, Cancer Chat Moderator

  • Hi thank you for giving me some positive feedback. My dad has got non Hodgkin lymphoma and he will have his first round of chemotherapy tomorrow. I still don't know what type or doses as I will meet the consultants tomorrow. I hope my dad is strong for his chemotherapy. Even though he is 77 doctors are saying he can cope hopefully.
