Alternative option, rather than the cheaper lop off your pup

Why do the surgeons always say we want to give you a mastectomy?! It's the cheapest option for the NHS, but there must be alternative options?! Anyone out there tried alternatives which have been successful?!

Where does it end, 'we'll take your breast off, just to be safe'? So if I have skin cancer, are you going to remove my skin 'just in case'. Remove my stomach 'just in case', remove my head, 'just in case' ?!? I'm not looking for the cheaper option... And I can't be the only one out there?! Can I??

  • Where did you get this information? This is not how medical judgements are made and the option or advice to have a mastectomy is done based on clinical evidence offering you the best possible outcome. I have had a masectomy so write from a position of knowledge. Ask your doctor for the clinical reasons they have offered you this rather than a lumpectomy/ then you can make your decision . Nobody can force you to have one. I hope this helps. There is never a guarantee of success with whatever route.

  • Hi I was given the choice of either Wide Local Excision or Masectomy. There was never any mention of cost. Also I think there are some situations which can only warrant Masectomy. E.g. Size or position of tumour. It's medical knowledge and experience I have found which is the decision maker. Sorry if you have not had a good experience.
