Dad diagnosed with Prostate Cancer - Desperate for info

My 79 year old dad was diagnosed with prostate cancer this week.  They have told us that he also has a lump on his kidney which needs investigated and also there are patches of cancer in the bones.  Because my dad didnt want to know a prognosis the family are in the dark of what to expect and how long he has.  They have started him on hormone injections but have already prescribed "Morphine".   He only went into hospital with a virus and this is what he came out with.  We are all in shock but need to face what is coming.. Can anyone help with this experiance.

  • Hi Bosswife,

Welcome and thanks for telling us about your dad. As someone who has had and recovered from prostate cancer, I can well understand your need for information

As the cancer has allready spread into the bones, they will probably not be able to cure your dad. But these days with modern treatments, It can be managed often for several years depending on how far the cancer has spread and if its an agressive cancer or not. Hormone therapy worked very well for me and brought my psa down from 70 to 3.18 even before I started radiotherapy.

I understand the shock you must all be feeling but I must just mention, most cancer patients like to try and keep some normality to their lives otherwise they feel cancer has taken over.

I do feel for you as a family as I know the rollercoaster ride of emotions that cancer brings. I wish you and you family all the best and am sending kind thoughts your way. Please keep us updated, Brian

  • Hi Brian ..Thanks for your kind words. I have hope so far that at 79 I can still get my dad into his ripe old age. I just dont know if I want to or need to know timescales. I am arranging with my dads consultant to disuss further .. as my dad is happy for the family to know everything my Dad wants to be kept int he dark. Again thanks .. Christine
