Stage 3 tumor appendix

Hello, Im wriiting as my friend has just found out that her appendicitis last February actually was a stage 3 tumor. It was removed, in February last year, but due to an error she never received her diagnosis of stage 3 cancer until now, 11 months later.

She has had blood tests today, and is scheduled in for a scan this week, but apperently wont get her results until 28th February 17.

Shes worried sick , her family is worried sick, but shes also confused as not been given much info regarding this type of cancer.

Is this serious, or does the fact she hasnt had warning signs in 11 months mean it is treatable ?

  • Hello nicd1981 and welcome to Cancer Chat,

I am so sorry to hear about your friend. It must have been a shock to her and everyone around her to receive the diagnosis 11 months after her appendix was removed.

I hope the scan goes well. Another long wait for results is bound to make her and her family very anxious and I hope that she can get some more information on her type of cancer. Cancers that develop in the appendix are usually called pseudomyxoma peritonei. If that is the type of cancer she has officially been diagnosed with, you can find some information about it here.

It might be worth also your passing on our nurse number to her family if they want to get in touch with our expert nurses to find out more about this type of cancer. Feel free also to ring them yourself if you want. The number of our nurse helpline is free to call and you can reach them on 0808 800 40 40, Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

I hope you will also hear from some of our members who have been affected by cancer of the appendix and that they will be along soon to tell you more about it and share their experience with you.

    Best wishes,

  • Hello nicd1981,

I also meant to say that there is also one of our regular members [@Cavecrawler]‍ who has been very much affected by pseudomyxoma peritonei and he would be a great person for you to talk to. He regularly shares his blog updates with us and he would have a lot of information for you on this type of cancer.

I hope he will see your message and share his story with you.

    Best wishes,
