Avemar

Hi my wife and I have just found out her father has bowel cancer which has spread to the liver and lungs. Doing research regarding certain drugs that could help I have come across the supplement avemar which works alongside chemo. From what I have read including trial results it seems almost a no brainer to take it as it is only a wheat germ product but claims to slow/stop cancer cells reproducing. Has anyone here had any experience with avemar and can they tell me if it has helped them?

  • Hello Mrree

The moderators asked me if I'd look into this for you.  I have had a look round and there is a small amount of published literature on this product, but most of the studies so far have been in animals or in cells in the lab.  The ones in people have been in small numbers of people and across a limited number of cancers.  So on balance I think it's fair to say that from a medical perspective there is not enough evidence to recommend its use. I would definitely talk to your father in law's doctor before he decides whether he wants to take it.  Also with diet supplements there may be  interactions with other medicines he might be taking now and in the future which are are not yet known about.

    I hope that helps
