Mum diagnosed with lung cancer stage 4

My mum was diagnosed with stage 4 lung nscl cancer which is also spread to secondary lump on her neck. They are only offering pallative care for her. They said that the typical survival period is 6-9 months. My mum seems fine she is not in any pain really. My mum also suffers from korsakoff syndrome so has no real short term memory unless it's repeated over and over.....she remembers she has cancer but at time struggles with the reasons for no treatment and time scales given but is fixated on them. My mum is in a residential care home she is 60. I am just after some advice on what to expect really, is she likely to sudeny drop or will it be something gradual? I know everyone is different but anything at this point would be good I am married but our lives at the moment seem to be revolving around this and I don't want to burden my husband any more than I have.

  • Hi, I am sorry for your Mum's diagnosis. My uncle has also just been diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer which has spread to the brain. He is deteriorating quite rapidly with weightloss and extreme breathlessness the main symptoms. They haven't even given us a timescale yet but we are pretty sure it can't be long. I'm sorry I can't be of much help but I wanted you to know that I'm going through the same thing and I'll be happy to chat if it helps.

Is your mum not having any treatment at all? My uncle is on steroids and they mentioned radiation which will be reviewed on 9th Jan. But seeing him, I can't imagine they will recommend it to be honest.

  • Hi no treatment for my mum at current anything if they give her it will be pallative I. E. Pain relief and radiation if she gets bleeding when she coughs which has not yet happened. She coughs obviously and gets breathless but other than that nothing. I was worried a few weeks ago when we took her out to do a bucket list activity as she was struggling to walk and said her lwgs were numb like they weren't there and after ringing district nurse was told to ring 111 and then told to take her to a and e and turns out she was very constipated but after upping her laxido she seems much better and seems able to walk more easily.....I thought it might have spread to her spine with the leg thing. Dr did want to give time limit but mum insisted so she did....they don't like to put a number as every person reacts differently they gave an estimated.
