Dad

My dad is 82 & has just been diagnosed with bowel cancer that has spread to his liver. He has been given options. Operate on the bowel & chemo, just chemo, or do nothing. We are worried that due to his age he might not recover from the anesthetic if he has the op & also the chemo will take away the quality of life he has. Has anyone else been in this situation & how the hell do you make this kind of life changing decision?

  • Welcome to the forum Carolee although I'm sorry to hear about your dad's diagnosis and the reason it has brought you here.

I'm not sure what your dad's medical team have told you about each treatment and the possible outcomes but I have found some information on our website here that may help give you more insight.

I hope you get to meet others that have been in a similar situation soon but it may be a worth giving our cancer nurses a call so you can discuss your dad's situation with them in more detail. They are available Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m on 0808 800 4040, which is free to call from a UK landline.

I hope this helps and that your dad and family are able to come to a decision. Do come back and let us know what you decide and how your dad is getting on.

Best wishes to you and your family,
