Just a little clarity

My mother was diagnosed with kidney cancer very late after seeing GPs for over a year. The kidney was removed in April and she was given an all clear; however now she has been diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer that has spread via the lymph nodes to her lung, bones, lining of the abdomen, and stem of the kidney that was removed. She has a mass at the base of her spine also.

we have been told it is terminal, and we have been told that any chemo would be palliative. However it has left my poor beautiful mother in a dilema. When she asks how much longer she has, she is being told that thye cant say 3-6 months maybe longer maybe shorter. She wants to prolong her life, but when she asks about chemo, she is told that her cancer is agressive and is not very responsive to chemo - so it could have no effect, or maybe 1 month, or maybe 6 months

I understand everyone is different, and that it is difficult to give definitive answrrs, but she is now so very stressed and upset because she feels she does not have enpugh information to make a decision. She does not want to have 18 weeks of chemo - and the side effects - if it results in  o effect or only one month. however she is more than willing to go through with it for 3-4 months more time with her family.

i understand the position of the the consultant - but surely as the experts they could tell us, in their experience, with patients with the same cancer and at a similar stage, what the likey outcome could be?

my mother feels she is be g made to make a decision woth no information and little understanding.

  • Hi James

My husband has stage 4 kidney cancer that has metastacised in his stomach and tissue behind the kidney that was removed. He has been on an immunotherapy drug called pazopanib which is a pill he takes daily. They call it chemo but it is not as aggressive although he has had a lot of side effects. He has just had to come off it for 10 days while they sorted out his blood pressure but he is back on it now and feeling much better. I don't think it is a cure but it might prolong his life long enough for him to meet his first grandchild in February. There is also a drug called Sutent that is suitable for kidney cancer.

Hope this helps a bit. Best wishes to you and your mum and the rest of the family.

  • Hi Jamesuk Im really sad to hear the story about your mom, how is she? Im terminal myself, and though im not a medical expert i read a lot about kidney cancers because im suffering from one. Based on what i read about it, there are many types of Kidney Cancers. The most common one is called Renal Cell Carcinoma. They said that these are the slow growing ones which takes years to manifest symptoms. My doctor said that mine had probably started to developed 15-20 years ago. According to studies, RCC is one of the cancer that has the highest rate of spontaneous regression/remission (they sometimes just vanished without any treatment) and thus is expected to respond well with immunotherapy (which is basically a therapy that affects and "instruct" the body's natural immune system to "attack" the cancer cells). However RCC respond poorly to conventional chemotherapy which is a therapy designed for aggressive and fast growing cancer cells (well it make sense right). I also read that in some RCC cases the removal of the primary tumor via surgery leads to spontaneous remission even if the cancer cells had already metastized (spread) to other parts of the body. Some doctors even advised for little intervention (no therapy) and will only perform periodic observation to measure any growth or spread (thats what im doing). However there are other types of uncommon, even rare, kidney cancers that are fast growing and are very aggressive. These are the ones the spread quickly once it metastized to other body parts. If i remember correctly these types respond poorly to immunotherapy but chemo therapy help on some cases. So you if you want some clarity on what type of kidney cancer youre mom is dealing with, try asking her physician, maybe you can stumble upon some information on the internet that will help you make some approximation that will help you in your decision. Wishing for your moms good health and well being.
