Hi just had surgery for breast cancer

Hi there i had surgery for breast cancer 3 days ago.Stage 3 aggresive lobular cancer.I had a lumpectomy and 2 sentinal nodes removed from under arm.I have to wait 2 weeks for the results to see if the cancer has spread. How do you switch your mind off from thinking the worst? upto now i have been positive but today, i have been emotional. Not sure why, maybe hormones etc?.I cant fault the doctors etc they have been excellant and from diagnosis to surgey has been less that 3 weeks! i know once the wounds have healed i am to have 15 sessions of radiotherapy.Has anyone any advice on how to deal with it mentaly? i am happilly married age 47,mum to 21 and 22 yr old kids live it home.Thankyou from Pepps x

  • I'm sorry to hear about your diagnosis pepps but I just wanted to let you know that many members here have been in a similar situation and will know what you're going through right now, especially when it comes to waiting for results, and I'm sure they will pop by soon to share their experiences and offer you their support and advice.

I hope you don't have to wait too long for the results and that it is good news when it arrives.

All the best with your radiotherapy pepps, we'll be thinking of you.

  • Did you have imaging before your surgery?  I had a lumpectomy and nodes removed but knew from the imaging that the cancer hadn't spread elsewhere in my body. I suspect that you are waiting to see if it is in the lymph nodes at the very worst. Please try not to worry, it won't change anything, it won't help. As it turned out my lymph nodes aren't involved, but I still need to have chemo and at the very least radiotherapy, but you know what, it's okay. At the end of the day when I had the surgery they cut out all the cancerous cells, the chemo and radio (or whatever else I may have) are an insurance policy for my future. I'm 44 with a 12 year old boy and I'm planning on being around for a long time yet. I'm counting myself very lucky, breast is best!!!  Ironically I work in a cancer office, so I knew a lot about cancer before I was diagnosed, which is both good and bad, but good is I know how treatable it is and that the care I am getting is second to none. Have a positive attitude is definitely key, okay so we can't be happiness personified all the time, no one expects that, but I refuse to do anything other than look for the positives and I promise there are plenty of them to find. I hope this helps. xx

  • Hi peeps123 your cancer sounds like mine, I had my lumpectomy and sentinel nodes biopsy done last Monday and I've got my results next Tuesday. It's torture waiting for the results isn't it? I know my cancer is grade 3 and I'm triple negative but just want to know what the next stage will be. I'm a positive person and I know things will be OK but this waiting really pushes a person doesn't it? Good luck with your results. Xx
  • Hi, I have stage 3 triple negative breast cancer. I was diagnosed in August and I am currently going through my treatment of: 6 session of FEC-T chemotherapy and then 3/4weeks of Radiotherapy. The waiting for results is the worst, once you start the treatment they plan for you, you feel a little bit more in control.

This forum is great, you get some really good advise and support from people in similar situations as yourself. It also lets you get your feelings out ( good or bad) which really does help. You don't feel so alone.

Wishing you the best with your results

  • Hi there i also had treatment for breast cancer but  please please remember no two breast cancers are the same . I had my appointment with oncology Dr today and if blood tests and heart tracings are all ok i start treatment on 13th Dec Am going to have FEC treatment  as i have devoloped skin cancer where i had breast removed. Don`t think it will happen to you as i have complex medical history. Be guided by Drs as they know best.. Take care.   Viv
