Advice

My Dad has just been diagnosed with cancer of the Gullet. his tumour is 6cm. He has been told by the oncologist that he is not well enough for chemotherapy. He is now having to wait until Friday to find out if they will operate but his pet scan showed a 2mm nodule on his lungs. If this is cancer they won't operate. Are there any other treatments he can have instead of chemo?

  • Hi Lisy,

So sorry to read about your Dad.

Have they said exactly why he is too ill for chemo and whether he might be OK some time in the future? I ask because sometimes chemo is ruled out due to everyday infections like a cold or flu which are eventually sorted out. Chemo weakens the immune system so even catching a cold can be serious if you're on chemo.

Surgery, chemo and radio-therapy can all be used for treating this type of cancer. In my case surgery and RT were ruled out because of its location close to my aorta

    Good luck for Friday.

    Dave

  • I'm sorry to hear that and hope you're OK.  they said it was because of my Dad's general health. He has diabetes, neuropathy, arthritis and angina. They said he wouldn't cope with it especially as it can effect the nerves and he already has nerve damage

  • That is so sad to read.
My Mum reached a similar stage where the chemo was going to do more harm than good.
    Best wishes
    Dave
