mastectomy

Just after other peoples' experiences. What does it feel like? reconstruction or not? How did you reach this decision?

  • Hi I had a double mastectomy in 2010 as I had breast cancer in 2000 I was scared it was going to come back in my other breast as with going ten years didn't think it would come back but it did I was 52 at the time I didn't think about reconstruction as bad enough having a double mastectomy  I just had them jelly ones then the foam ones the jelly ones weigh a ton you are sore for a while but you will get over it do what you feel is right for you and hope your ok

  • Hi, I had a mastectomy last September, I didn't decide about it. It was decided because I had lobular cancer in three places. After the operation it was a strange feeling knowing it wasn't there, but came to terms with the fact that I had no other option. I wasn't offered a reconstruction at the time as I needed radiotherapy after chemotherapy, so it was felt that the radiotherapy might damage any reconstruction.

I am now a year later and still haven't decided on reconstruction, just want to concentrate on getting my life back again. I haven't ruled it out for the future.

All the best on whatever you decide. Audrey.

  • Hi Audrey,

Thanks for your reply. I was wondering if I could ask you a couple of questions? How long did it take you to recover from the operation and how long were you in hospital for?

    Thanks again,

    Wombat

  • Hi Wombat

I was in hospital over night, I could have gone home the same day but as I live on my own it was decided because of the general anaesthetic I should stay in over night. When I was discharged from hospital I had to wear a compression garment, it was a bit like a sports bra, but a bit longer. Had to keep that on for about a week. I started to drive about 10 days after the op. Then it was fine, I started to go to the pool to exercise before my chemotherapy started.

When will you know what is going to happen?

    Good luck. Audrey
